The last PC I built, onboard Radeon 3300HD GPU was enough for the games I was playing and the successive I wanted to start playing. Up until now I haven't had to buy a more powerful graphics card for it yet, so the overprice for PC gaming compared to using it for not gaming use is still zero, although it could rise to around 100€ in the future, if needed (my games backlog grants me that I don't ever need the latest and more costly GPU, when I start a once demanding game, mid or even low range GPUs are already become able to run it).
OTOH I can't deny that getting a minority of games to run can be sometimes troublesome. With time this problem was reduced, but a new f*ing problem arose: some DRM's and other copy protection systems can mess CD and DVD drivers up and the f*ing dumb Windows let them do it. Right now I'm playing the less demanding games I installed on the laptop, but I must reinstall Windows on the desktop, as every attempt to reinstall just the drivers fails, those stinking copy protection programs are worse than viruses, and what's worse, antiviruses don't stop them! (And yes, I'm sure the DVD writer works, I regularly use it on Linux).
