Forums - Gaming - IGN: Why you should be excited for DmC

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/112/1121258p1.html

I love Devil May Cry, though the only game I played in the series religiously was Devil May Cry 3. Even still, hearing that Capcomand developer Ninja Theory are rebooting the franchise with what we all assume is a prequel has made me extremely excited. After watching the trailer that debuted here at the Tokyo Game Show several times in a row, I just can't get over how many awesome things happen in the span of just a few seconds. Despite how much hate the project is already massing on the oh-so-kind internet threads, I think the appropriately titled DMC will rock.

From what I can tell, the main complaint that everyone seems to be focusing on is the change to Dante's character design. Well it is shocking at first, I think it makes total sense, especially when you consider the direction that the developers are taking the series. Even though I'm a Devil May Cry advocate, the series started to feel stale to me when I hit the fourth game. This franchise needs a twist, and that's what Dante is getting. His emaciated body and unstable mannerisms displayed in the trailer hint at a character unversed in his demonic powers. This is clearly an origin story and I think it'll be fascinating to see a dangerously imbalanced hero wield such incredible weapons.

What confuses me about the fan reaction thus far is that people seem to think the developers are changing Dante too much, but all the things that make him a fun character remain. He's powerful, over-the-top and he's a total badass. It's clear as day when he puts out his cigarette on the head of an enemy, and when he uses what looks like the classic Ebony and Ivory pistols to deal with his opponents.

But what most sold me on the trailer are the scenes depicting Dante's captivity in a mental institution. The enigmatic voice pressing Dante for answers could be a story-telling device for us to learn more about Dante's past and his life before he was the cocky lady killer we all know and love.

The footage that features Dante's transforming weapon is also enticing. This could inform us that DMC will feature a more complex combat system where players can string together huge combos with tons of different weapons.

Of course, my nerd explosion reached critical overload when the trailer shows Dante levitating off city walls and tearing through the environment. If this is a gameplay mechanic as well as a cutscene highlight (and you know it will be), you might as well put me down for a pre-order.

Overall, I think the trailer is really well put together and it was a great way to tease the project. I encourage anyone who immediately dismissed the changes to take another look and realize that the core Devil May Cry concepts will very likely remain the same. After all, all the Devil May Cry games always feature Dante lounging around as a fundamental item on his "badass checklist." (think about the openings to both DMC 1 and 3). The fact that the trailer ends with Dante smoking against the skyline of a menacing city is a nod to all the fans out there.

So I'm excited. Why aren't you?

I couldn't agree more to be honest. I think this has a lot of potential for awesome, and I don't understand why there is so much backlash out there. I know there is gonna be backlash with change like this, but come on people!

Looks worse than DMC2, I'll skip this.

I'm excited too, and am dying to watch some gameplay videos

You don´t?....I mean, I don´t like the new Dante, but if I think it´s  a good game, I won´t let character design stop me from playing....but I understand the backlash.

I understand why there is backlash, expecting anything else would have been silly. But I think there is an outrageous amount of backlash, and I don't understand why there is this much hate against the title. That's what I don't understand.

@Rainbird

I´ve read lots of comments where people think the new Dante is too 'Twilight-fied' haha...since Twilight is a highly hated movie, maybe you can put some connection there, I dunno.

Possibly. All I know is that people ought to be more excited about this imo.

The hate this game is getting is unjustified, with some comments comparing it to Twilight..... Really? This is meant to be Dante in his Younger days hence the black hair with a strand of white and hence he doesn't have the rebellion.

Hopefully Vergil will be incorporated some how, would love to face or play as him!

Like I've said time and time again...

If this is a reboot of the series, I'm all for it,  I mean, it'd make sense to give him a fresh look and stuff, y'know, new look for a new beginning.

But if this is a sequel/prequel to any of the other games, then I'll pass because he seems way too different, even has a different voice, completely different setting etc.

Although I honestly think it'll be a reboot, since the logo looks different too, and it doesn't have the gothic feeling to it, so I'll more than likely buy it.

The trailer was pretty cool too I suppose.

I'm pretty sure it's a reboot, or they wouldn't have changed this many things and given it a different name (DmC instead of Devil May Cry), but I think the premise will probably be somewhat the same, with the background story and the like.

ive always wanted a reboot for DMC but i cant get over how bad dante looks, hes coat and hes hair(not the colour the style) its just bad
