Sony: likely to meet annual PS3 sales target

(Reuters) - Sony Corp (6758.T) said on Thursday PS3 game console sales were on track to reach the company's target of 15 million units for the year to March 2011, with first-half sales likely just above forecast.

First half above forecast? I really would like to know how they plan to meet their projection. They're up 1.3 million on Q1 but almost all of those gains will likely vanish after Q2. Under the current circumstances I can't see them making up almost 2 million in the second half of the fiscal year. Perhaps Source's theory is correct and we'll see a price cut around the beginning of next calendar year. I'm also curious to see if they think they can hit their software projection for the entire PS family (around 200 million).

PS3 sold about 12.5 million units last year right? Before September I think the YoY gain was 1.6 million? Now the first full week Slim has been out thats dropped to 1.2 million already. I think by the end of September/October, YoY will be on par to last year, and I can't picture GT5 making up for a console redesign. I don't think the PS3 will surpass 12 million yearly sales ever again.

Still 11.01 million I beleive is the old 360 record, I think the PS3 can beat that this year. However I think this year will be 360's peak year. I curious to know if it will be above PS3's peak year.

so wait.... you think the ps3 peaked and the 360 didn't?

They must be betting A LOT on Move and GT5. Maybe a price cut announcement at GDC.

It almost certain that Sony meet the 15M shipped target.

I think they'll meet it. They've got a good amount of buzz right now, from their games, to Move. They'll ride the storm through March 2011 (end of fiscal) and meet their goal.

This would mean that they expect the PS3 to be up YoY. Again, I think they'll get it.

I'm hopeful that they'll meet it as well. It's just that logistically it looks very difficult.

Unless we're undertracking it if shipments line up with sales it will probably lose almost all of it's YOY lead after Q2. I can't see it making back 2 million in Q3 and Q4. With GT5 and Move I think it might be flat or possibly ever so marginally up in Q3. That's why I strongly suspect we'll see a price cut in calendar Q1 next year. If that is the case, with that report from Barrons that Microsoft isn't expecting a big January-March I think shipments could be very close by the end of the fiscal year.

hell yeah they'll make it remember last Q4 PS3 had severe supply problems it was its 1st after holiday season with the slim they had sold a shit load during nov-dec 09 and where in the process of going to 40nm rsx skus

Q4 2011 should be way up from 09 with games like motorstorm KZ3 and possible socom 4 and twisted metal and it should have a shit load of momentum from GT5 release, rumors looked like there were going to have  price cut at least in EU but i doubt any PC till end of 2011 now there secret weapon this holiday season may be $349 160gb move bundle and  massive amounts of wide variety bundles available WW not just in EU oops now its not a secret

as for losing all its YOY lead in Q2 we'll find out in a few weeks we may be surprised with its numbers as most were for Q1

They'll be down in Q3 but could be up in Q4 (Gran Turismo 5).

Maybe not... Q3 last year was a little difficult to found a PS3 on market... without supply issues could sell better this year.

They will probably need a price cut
