Short version:  you are given a character by PM that you play in the game thread.  Some of the players are evil mafia who want to take over the town by killing everyone else in the night (normally one at a time); everyone else has to stop them by lynching the bad guys by day (normally one at a time). 

Ordinarily no one can join after the game starts; but you can tell the moderator of the game (dtewi) that you are interested in being an alternate if a player drops out, and you can always sign up for the next game when the sign up thread is made.
