Forums - Microsoft - Halo : Combat Evolved is nothing special...

Goldeneye 007 is nothing special.  It may have been hot shit in 1997, but over a decade later, it ain't so hot.

-But in 2001, Halo got the controls right.  People (on consoles) were playing Red Faction and Timesplitters.  Halo controlled better than those games.  Halo had graphics that were miles beyond those games.  People (not me--I hated the original Xbox.  Still not quite sure why.  I guess because I didn't have one.) were linking multiple consoles together and having somewhat of an equivalent of online gaming, back in those days.  I played 2-Player co-op on X-Mas 2001 (my girlfriend's nephew had gotten an X-Box and tried to impress me because he knew I was a gamer.  I had a PS2 and I hated on his console so badly that he traded it for a GBA.  I feel pretty bad about that.) and it was pretty fun.

So yeah.  Playing it now, it's going to be below average.  There are games that were great at the start of THIS generation that were good in 2005/2006 that I wouldn't want to play, now.  The industry and gamer tastes evolve fast.  Halo 1 is just one of those games that got left behind.

If this is your first time trying to play Halo CE then no wonder you don't think its good. Its fucking outdated now. I played Goldeneye 007 a few months ago for the first time (never had an N64) and I thought it was total cow shit but only because the controls sucked dick and the graphics are 13 years outdated.

Halo on PC? Yep, it's a pretty average game. But on Xbox and with controller...  I must say it's pretty cool. Especially multiplayer!

I'm playing with my PS3 controller fixed to the PC.. so....

Maybe because you're like 9 years late. How many 9 year old games are still fun today? Not that many.

There are lots of old games that are still fun. Lots of Halo fans still think this one has the best campaign mode.

it does...

No it doesn't. It's like horrible. The story sucked.

Halo 3 redeemed the series for me.

really... i felt 3 had the worst story. right now i feel

haloe: ce

ODST

halo 2

halo 3

for single player... co-op might be slightly diffrent the arbiter in 3 ruined it for me... really why have him along at all..  the levels felt smaller, i could not back track if i wanted to the vehical sections felt less epic. ODST restored my faith in story telling and action in the ingle player series.

halo CE changed my view of fps's i had lapsed from playing them to that point... i think duke nukem, golden eye and medal of honor had been what i had been playing on console having left pc fps for all the cheating and terrible latency  ... halo felt different. the ai seemed smarter, the game had a story i didnt expect in a world the was fun and engauging.and looked so much better then anything else i had played to that point.

form there i branched back out into computer fps again, and online play whic i had stopped...

it may not have been the first but it was the spur that brought the fun back into fps gaming ... that i lost somewhere along the way ...  live has kept me in online fps, while there is cheating, its no where near as bad as most pc online comunities,

still role with my rts on the pc though only way to play rts or tbs is pc.

edit ... still do lament the demise of rainbow 6 from raven shield to vegas .... still love the series, but the smaller levels on the console and smaller team sizes of vegas took something away from the game going to console... hopefully they can bring it back to its old glory in the next release ....

Don't know about that. Over a decade later, it's still one of the best FPS titles for offline multiplayer and surely keeps many coming back to it this day. Many FPS modern FPS games can't/won't do that.

Okay.

http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/halo-combat-evolved

Halo CE on the PC was crap, only a 83 metacritc.

Halo CE on xbox was amazing and had a metacritc of 97.

Also It means very little coming from a ps3 only owner, who is playing the PC version of a game that came out in 2001.

Well it was pretty ok. Single player was enjoyable but couldn't hold the candle when compared to Quake 3, UT or Counter strike in multiplayer.

But console gamers didn't have those games so here you have explanation why they worship it.

Nostalgia.  My first Halo game was Halo 3.  After that, I went back and bought Halo 1 & 2.  I liked Halo 3 the most.  Most people won't go back and play the games they loved so much.  It tends to have a negative effect on the memory of the game......at least for me.  Remembering games as they were, when they were cutting edge makes a lot of people say things like that.  That's my theory/experience, anyway.

You're doing it wrong. On the Main Menu, you're supposed to click on "Multiplayer".

Oh, and the Grunts rock! I love their random lines and the stuff they say when I die.

I hate this, and this is coming from someone who really doesn't have anything to say about Microsoft consoles/games.

I honestly respect trolls more than anyone who trash talks an older game. Maybe trash talk is too strong of a word, but if you're going to play a game that's almost ten years old for the first time and judge it as if it was released in the current generation, I really can't take your opinion seriously anymore. Now I've personally never played Halo: Combat Evolved (nor care for it) but I believe people who say it revolutionized the FPS. The fanbase is too huge to ignore and it must be doing something right.

Same goes for people who played Final Fantasy VII recently and took shots at it.
