The gameservers.com exclusivity means no server-side mods. That's the issue.

The OP is missing the point. Of course you have to pay for hosting, unless you wanna host it yourself.

You need to rent them, if you want to own a server. The vast majority of players don't rent servers, and they'll just play on the public or private servers. It's pretty much the same as BC2.
