Forums - Sales Discussion - [Used-Sales-Age] DQ4 in heavy trading; Wii Fit sales "subdued"

http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20071207-00000001-maiall-game

We interviewed Mr. OMORI Shun'ichi of the used game and DVD shop "TRADER", of Akihabara and other locations. With the recent volatility in the used-game market fresh in his mind, he spoke of the current circumstances.

"Dragon Quest IV" (DS, Square Enix), helped by its near-sellout status as a new game, is both selling very well and being traded in quickly. Because "DQ" games lose value quickly due to sales volume, many copies are being traded in early. This is also increased due to the ease of leveling up, ease of play for the DS's light-user population, and its quick clear time. As a runner-up DS title, "Game Center CX" (DS, Bandai Namco Games) is also beginning to be traded in, but it's back out the door as soon as we get it on the shelves.

As for new titles, though we worried about its shipment figures, "Professor Layton and the Demon's Box" (DS, Level Five) gives me a good feeling. Its gap between shipment and sales figures was low, and like the predecessor "Mysterious City" we expect it to have legs, especially due to new game retailers' lack of post-release price cuts. However, the current price for "Mysterious City" remains higher. Also, we've begun to buy "SD Gundam G Generation Spirits" (PS2, Bandai Namco Games). Since as a simulation game it takes some time to complete, and it didn't have several different sets of bonus goods, it's surprising it's being sold back this early. It's probable there are many users whose tastes it just didn't suit; however, since we're selling it quickly, I'm still pleased with it.

Finally, on the topic of Wii Fit, most forecasts appear to have been mistaken; its sales are subdued. It's still available in most shops in Akiba, and most users seem to be taking a "wait-and-see" approach. For the Wii's biggest holiday title to have these sales, it seems we can't expect any more Wii hits in the short term.

I'm sure DQ IV is seeing heavy trade in rather quickly.

On the issue of Wii Fit, however, this report is simply wrong. There are way, way too many reports of full sell outs within 2-3 days: there are too many pictures of huge lines; I've read countless reports on GAF, in which every single Japanese poster stated that their supply was out. We were told the game would have an initial 300k shipment, at most, and it sold 261 in one day, or 80% of its initial shipment.

Again, this person is simply wrong, in regards to Wii Fit -- unless the other 99 reports I've seen are wrong, and this lone report that provides no data of any kind is correct.

Just did some research in to this. The store in question:

1) Has an enormous Hentai Game collection -- an entire FLOOR of the store is dedicated to porn games

2) Is a used game store first and foremost, and people aren't turning in Wii Fit because it's a peripheral game

3) Is in akhibara, the otaku part of town

And would be the last place anyone would ever go for a game like Wii Fit. So, that explains why this particular report was so vastly different from the other ten or so (MC, Famitsu, anecdotal reports, photos) that we've seen.

Some stores had big lineups other stores had none. You live in Japan?

No, but many of these people do:

Every single person who lives in Japan in that thread confirmed a sellout by the second day of sales in their area (most said it sold out immediately -- a few, such as Swerve, said it took over a day).  Lots of them have tons of pictures to prove it, too.

Furthermore, Media Create, VGChartz, and Famitsu all report 80-85 percent sell through in 2 days, which puts Wii Fit in the top 2-3 percent of games.

Again: all the evidence we have at our disposal says this is wrong, and I just explained WHY it is wrong. The DQ IV re-sales seem to be right on target, however.

Well considering Wii fit sales were around 250K in its frst two days I would say that his comments on Wii fit are false

THX Bodhesatva !

Time to Work !

Try and tell Onna76 that it's not sold out - her order has been cancelled and it was made months ago.

Those people that think they're perfect give a bad reputation to us who are...

"With the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen, but I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that." - Phil Harrison, Sony

I wonder if Nintendo sent a second shipment this week?
