It just completely confuses how people can admire a musical artist that has zero musical ability.

Speaking into autotuner != artist

Oh twesterm, you and your unyielding superiority complex.

I wouldn't say that since I don't really think I'm better than him, I'm probably just as good as him since I can't really sing either.

Kanye is a hip-hop artist, and a great one at that, regardless of his ego. Go look at his past albums, then come and tell me with an honest face that you could do as good as him, with or without autotune.

I'm sorry but anyone that uses the I'd like to see you do better argument automatically fails.  If I were a professional you could say that, but I'm not.  Saying someone is better at someone than something else when the other isn't a paid professional is really saying nothing.

That's like if I said the worst player in the NFL was awful but then you proved me wrong by saying I'd to see you do better.

-edit-

Eh, why not, proof anyone can be as good as Kanye

Nah man, Kanye can't sing at all. TWesterm is probably just at good as he it at singing.

Now, if we're talking about poetry, then none of the rap I've heard even comes near the level of, say, Robert Frost or Edgar Allen Poe.

If we are talking about mixing it all together, well, there are equally talented people on youtube, who make great videos using fruity loops. Look up "You play to win the game" on youtube.

Look at Elton John, or Queen. Can you honestly say Kanye is as good as Elton John at songwriting or singing?

He's good compared to his direct limited competition, but he pales in comparison to the greats.

All subjective... it all depends on your taste and what you like your greats differ greatly then mine... makes neither one of us right or wrong

There's opinion and there's fact.

Opinion: you like Kanye West, that is your personal preference.

Fact: Kanye West is an awful person and an awful musical artist.

It's perfectly cool if you like Kanye West, that's your preference, but that doesn't make him a good artist.

--And for the record, this song was on West's second album well before the death of his mother.  In fact, I like the album version better.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNAR8Gqb1ok&feature=related

And if the man is so untalented, explain this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_awards_and_nominations_received_by_Kanye_West

And if he's racist, why is he one of very few rappers that is going out of his way to work with acts like Maroon 5, Coldplay, Jon Brion and U2?  The man has a big ego but damn if I don't love his music.  As a fan of hip-hop since the 80's, I'm less than satisfied with the direction the music has taken in the last 15 years.  Kanye West is, too.  That's why he makes the kind of music he makes.  That's why he made an album where he did nothing but sing (badly) despite not being a singer.  The stuff that doesn't get headlines or lots of radio play.  The stuff about uplifting people, getting priorities in order, praising Jesus, or loving your family--that's the kind of music that this man makes that I enjoy.  He makes his "I'm so bad ass, I have so much money" songs, too but that's part of being a rapper.

And he's one hell of a producer, too.  Just because you don't know enough about him or don't like him doesn't mean he sucks.  He's a big name and one of the few artists that can still sell platinum albums in this day and age for a reason.

Kanye is definitely not on the level or ever will be of 2Pac, the Notorious B.I.G. Eminem, and Jay-Z. His early life with a professor for a mother giving him a solid upper middle class upbringing precluded Kanye's chances of garnering the street credibility to write 5 albums about his time slanging dope on the streets. Rappers need street credibility for longevity, without it they lose the rebel image after 2 multi-platinum albums and become just another super star whose esoteric lyrics are hard to relate to unless you are a millionaire celebrity who has gone to drug rehab.

As for the original question, Kanye is a quite bright, but I would not go so far as genius.

Kanye West has been a jackass, but I do not believe he is a jackass. The immaturity has shown, which make some view him as a jackass.

Rappers DON'T NEED street cred to have longevity. Word to Common, Talib and Mos Def

EDIT- Also VGC really hates Rap and Hip Hop. I had a thread about Jay-Z surpassing Elvis for most number 1 albums debut and I got bashed..I'll never forget the most ignorant comment when Seece claimed Hip-Hop wasn't music.

Common, Talib and Mos Def have sold nowhere near the amount of records as 2Pac, the Notorious B.I.G., Eminem and Jay-Z. Likewise, they have nowhere near the influence on the young white kids and black kids in the suburbs who made 2Pac, the Notorious B.I.G., Eminem and Jay-Z multi-millionaires.

It may be Black Culture, but the people making you a millionaire are not young thugs in Queensbridge or Compton; they are young white kids in the suburbs many of whom whose parents combine for $100k a year.

As for longevity, you are right, but playing that type of "game" will not get you rolling in Bentleys and owning private jets.

btw 2 pac has the guiness world record of most money earned while dead, and he sold the most rap albums according to wikipedia, Dont put 2pac and B.I.G in the same league as eminem and Jay-Z cause they are a level or two lower
