I doubt it stops the hack people.

Actually, it does.

"Update: We can confirm that all variants of the USB-hub emulating exploit (PSFreedom, PSGroove, PSJailbreak) are no longer functional in firmware 3.42."

unless you hack and don't update for now.

A lot of people may choose to use PS3 offline and have another one for must play online games. Also whats so hard about not updating to 3.42 for a few weeks and waiting for a new hack firmware? Just saying...

By the time Sony gets this firmware on new game disks which trully makes it a manditory update, hack will most likely be updated to go around the Sony firmware block.

Sony's got several way to protect :

All future games and applications to require a new firmware (and by requiring I mean the game can not work without it, offline or online)

For very important games (GT5) they could provide a Dongle necessary to play it

They could also make a mandatory install for games that force you to update firmware (once the game starts to install, it installs also the new firmware)

They can go the way with online activation of new games

They can also try to update their firmware very frequently (weekly basis)

When I raid "FW 3.42 now Live" I knew it was to block the jailbreak.

The way I see it, like leo-j said, it's a win-win situation for Sony. Some people will buy a second console just to have one hacked and one with online play. People will still buy games which they want to play online and Sony makes money from the console itself now. Unfortunately, it also means many people with buy used consoles to get one with old FW. Also sales for single-player could go down a bit.

updated: 14.01.2012

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

i hope it fries any ps3 which gets hacked.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

My PS3 updated now... little download (maybe 5MB) ans quick install.

I know it's only been less than two weeks, but I was starting to wonder what was taking them so long.

Good to hear they're finally doing firmware patches, which save a lot of time over complete firmware DL/installations.

Yay, im glad. I know its not over but i still love it when sony makes it harder for hackers.

Future games will only work on 3.42, so even if you manage to backup the game via jailbreak you won't be able to play it unless you hack the game too. On PC this is easy since you have full control over the operating system and there are sw/hw debuggers available. On ps3 this is not the case unless you have a ps3 debug console....

"The PS3 jailbreak and PSGroove reportedly attack consoles running firmware version 3.41 by simulating a USB hub with six devices on an Atmel microcontroller-based developer board, and sending crafted configuration descriptors to the PS3 when first connected. The descriptor is used by USB devices to indicate how many connections it possesses and whether it has an external power supply. Very long descriptors cause buffer overflows on the PS3, allowing code to be injected onto the stack and executed.

In order to circumvent the copy protection mechanism, the simulated USB hub proceeds through a number of steps and emulates connecting various devices in a specific sequence. In doing so, it triggers a series of buffer overflows allowing it to write various pieces of data and code to the stack. The final step is to execute the code."

If the buffer overflow is fixed I don't think they can adjust the PS3 jailbreak to the new firmware.

Not really... Newer games have always come with the latest firmware or the one just prior depending one when the game goes into print. It's been that way since Firmware 1.02. Most just didn't know about this until the recent Other OS hack thing.
