Forums - General - Church plans to burn the Quran on Sept. 11

I'm getting annoyed with all the atheists saying that we should burn all of the religious books.

Freedom of belief is important, you can't just expect everybody to believe the same thing as you and there is no reason to disrespect the beliefs of the many moderate believers out there.

True, whoever thinks this is no better then those Church members.

I'm OK with the mosque and I'm OK with it.  Then again, I'm an atheist, so I think they should throw the bible in that fire also.

Rather they recycled them all. But them again most Americans dont care about 'that crap'. Just like I dont care about all the crap that religious fanatics like these people come up with.

Seriously, Im sure Ive seen news reports about other groups doing similar things to aggravate religious tensions. Most of them are linked to terrorist groups.

The news groups???

Actually quite possibly, where else do they get all the breaking news about that stuff.

No, seriously I mean the activists.

This act of burning books will only result in the undermining of the efforts of thousands of Christians around the world as well as fuel the hatred of Islamic extremists.  As a Christian, and a human-being, I am greatly disturbed.

Why do few Christians have to make the rest of us look like bigots?

Think of how normal Muslims must feel when their extremist brethren blow up people in the name of their church.

It makes me think of the crusades(not a perfect comparison, just going for the general idea)... but yeah, it just really sucks >_>

The problem with that comparison is that Islamic terrorists organisations aren't representative as a whole for muslims and muslim society. In the case of the Crusades you had European states wage war on muslim states, and the Catholic Church inciting anti-mulsim sentiments within the general population, so the scale was much larger, and it could be viewed as representative as the main institutions of the time (the monarch and the Church) were supporting the Crusades. Also regular Christians back then were not tolerant of others' beliefs, them beeing very radical, plus influenced by the Church, so I doubt they had much sympathy for the muslims.

I have a question .. an honest one

Do I have the right to insult some members on these fourms and call them " fanboys" or whatever (not criticism .. just insulting ) because they post something that I don't like  ?

if that's the case then we should recognize ioi and his staff as people who against the freedom of speach because they will ban us for doing so .

That what I got from many of your posts people .

Strange , even when I was an atheist I thought that my freedom stops when it comes to hurting the others ( again not criticism just hurting ) , but that's probaly just me ...

Well, this forum is the property of this ioi fellow so he can choose to not allow certain people on it. It's kinda like saying that if you go into someone's house and insult them if they throw you out they're going against your freedom of speach.

What if "ioi" doesn't really care about it and won't react , do I have the right to do so ?

You can do whatever you want, but if you break the rules you will be punished accordingly. One of the rules in here is that you must not insult other users.

This is exercised very liberally and usually up to the discretion of the moderators, as what one may find offensive, others will not.

Honestly if they wanted to be dicks, they should just have a Mohammed-drawing party.  Burning the Koran is 10 times worse and makes it harder for anybody else to defend them.  Of course, they should have the right to do both, but they also have the right to pull their heads out of their asses any time they'd like, and I don't see them exercising that one.

agreed. they can't morally justify this no matter how hard they try to spin it.

I thought this was an interesting article. Turning religious freedom around, to see if all the people who support the building of that Mosque will defend this churches freedoms.

Clever move if you ask me.

Not going to waste my time reading through all these pages but to quote just the op.

To me this is the same argument as allowing flag burning.

My answer to both is the same. I greatly dislike it as its just pathetic, childish, and only cause for anger and hatred, however, I'd defend their right to do it any day.

In specifics to this Quran burning though, seriously? Its not clever in the slightest as its pathetic and just makes them as bad as the Taliban, Saudis, other extremists, etc, etc. I think it undermines them as well as the US's attempt to be seen as not being at war with Islam vs being at war with terrorism itself.

Books should be read, not burned.

Burning books is just wrong as they are the basis of all our knowledge, culture and development.

To quote Heinrich Heine:

"Dort wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen."

or in English: "Where they burn books, they will ultimately also burn people."

and what makes it really fitting: The quote is a reaction to the Christian inquisition burning a Qur'an. (in the tragedy it's from)

I'm all for world peace, but then again ..there are way too many people living on earth already (I think the max should be at ~4 billion - best thing China ever died was restricting families to have 1 child), so some conflicts can't hurt, heh.

This is one of the scariest posts on here. So are you proposing genocide?
