I think this is all in preparation for a full fledged 3D Pokemon on 3DS

3D as in 3rd dimension not the "avatar" type 3D...though that will probably be implemented too.

Probably, because it seems that they're also overhauling the presentation. If they're doing this on a DS, I'm just itching to see what they can do on the 3DS

As for pokemon in 3D ("avatar" type)...that would be too awesome for words...
