Forums - Microsoft - Windows Mobile 7 - Success or Failure?

microsoft never had alot of mobile marketshare, they may improve but they won't significant.

I think it will be a sucess as long as they back up the OS with a more powerful phone...I have a 6.1 phone now which would be great if it didnt lag so damn much...I want a new phone already.

I have a Windows Mobile 6.1 phone. I got it for two reasons: (1) I liked the idea of being able to move over the games from my old Pocket PC and (2) I liked the idea of having full-featured Office programs on my phone.

I regretted it within hours when I learned that my employer only provided support for direct email over Blackberry units (which no one told me until after I got the phone -- which you think someone would have because the contract is through the employer). Then I found the old programs don't work and I rarely use the Office ones.

Basically, Windows Mobile 7.0 sounds as full-featured as the iPhone OS 3, which was out-of-date when it was released a couple of years ago. So I don't expect these phones to do all that well.  They don't meet a lot of needs and a lot of people are leery of Microsoft.

As for me, I probably will move to something else ... either a Blackberry or an Android. I am holding off, seeing what my employer is planning on doing.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Just out of curiosity:

What do you think about the Windows Phone 7 user interface design?

Looks a bit simplistic but I think thats what they are aiming for.  Maybe it will be easier for people to use and they won't crash into me when they are driving down the street searching for something on their phones.

Been using the ZuneHD for a while now and love the UI.  Sweeping and swiping is incredibly responsive, accurate, and most importantly, entertaining to use.  People are going to love it.

I like my android phone. I have no interest in switching to a windows 7 phone.

While windows 7 phone may gain some marketshare, I don't see it passing its competition.

Maybe I wasn't precise enough, I meant the user interface design, not the handling. That extremely simple "Metro" look that does not use any kind of eye-candy.

The entertaining to use aspect definitely is due to design.  The touch controls are definitely put to use to great effect.

Pivot and Panorama controls are a great visual and functional way to display information and different functions of an application.

Tiles offer a simple, visual indication of what an application is and developers can implement visual notifications for tiles to display.

I think the UI is quite attractive because it is not full of ornate visuals.

Here is a nice little demonstration:

Modest success. Should be able to take around 20% of the market, give or take 5%. It will take that because Microsoft spares no expense when it decides to grab a market and because the carriers want platform diversity so they can maintain control. The actual quality of the product is almost beside the point.

Whether that's enough to pay off for Microsoft is another question. Historically, Microsoft has a tough time making money when it doesn't have monopolistic marketshare.
