The entertaining to use aspect definitely is due to design. The touch controls are definitely put to use to great effect.
Pivot and Panorama controls are a great visual and functional way to display information and different functions of an application.
Tiles offer a simple, visual indication of what an application is and developers can implement visual notifications for tiles to display.
I think the UI is quite attractive because it is not full of ornate visuals.
