Forums - Gaming - ASA finds Square-Enix guilty of using misleading FFXIII 360 ad

"A gaming expert yesterday warned the decision could hurt Microsoft, makers of the Xbox. ‘A ruling like this could prove devastating to sales of the Xbox, simply because gamers are a very demanding lot who expect the very best,’ said the anonymous expert.

Square-Enix, makers of the sci-fi role-playing Final Fantasy series, said the TV advert used images that did not contain actual gameplay but had been taken from full motion video (FMV). They admitted, however, the images used were ‘played back’ on the PS3 as it ‘allowed advertisers to capture the FMV footage for the advert’."

"The ASA said: ‘The PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the Xbox 360.’

It said the advert should have featured footage derived from the Xbox. ‘Because it did not, and because we considered that the use of PS3 footage in the ad exaggerated the quality of the footage available on the Xbox 360, albeit marginally, we concluded the ad was misleading,’ it added.

Square-Enix told the ASA it did not believe ‘any average viewer, or indeed avid gamer’ would see any difference unless ‘reviewing the materially forensically’."

Anyone ever think that this was gonna come back and bite S-E in the ass?

What do you think?

Honestly, who cares? They aren't advertising the game anymore, and it was one of the rare exceptions that the PS3 version was actually "superior" to the 360 one, so anybody acting like this is going to happen a plethora of times in the future is kidding themselves.

What does that have to do at all with the OP?

Fact is that if the game was advertising the XBox360 version it must contain only XBox footage, even if it isn't gameplay.

This is about what S-E did and was found guilty of, not about which console gets better looking multiplatform titles.

How about that part, chief, or are you going to fly off the handle and ignore part of the article that you decided to make a thread off of?

To be honest, The advert was advertising the game. Only at the end it advertised a 360 bundle. At no point did it say it was exclusive or that the footage was from any particualr system.

IMO. There will be no conviction on this at all. Mark my words.

In the end, it's a lawsuit over nothing.  The quality difference between graphics on the PS3 or Xbox360 is so marginal as to be nearly non-existant.

Frivolous, if you ask me.

What about it? It's part of the article, not to mention it has no relation at all to what I bolded in your post.

They are just saying that a ruling like this could have a negative effect on both companies.

Did the commercial mention the PS3 version anywhere at all? If not then it was advertising FFXIII for the XBox360.

Yeah it may not end up being anything big, probably just Metro blowing things out of proportion, but I figured it was worth a post, especially since if I remember correctly people made a big deal out of it months ago.

Ha, wow, are you kidding me? Nevermind, I'm getting out of this thread before I say something I regret. And yeah, it has everything to do with the part you bolded.

This would be like 2K making a commercial for Mafia 2 on PS3 and using PC footage.

Although I think that would be a MUCH bigger issue.
