Plenty of PS3 owners picked up a slim to replace their older models. 360 has a bigger install base.

Although that is true, for everyone one that replaced their old model with a slim theres probably about 3 that did it for the jasper and about 1 that did it again for the 360 silm

Oh ok you're right. I must be imagining things then when every person I know owns a 360 and I can count on one hand how many people own a PS3. Its time for you to buy a calendar and realize this isn't 1999 when Sony dominated. The 360 has sold more consoles, has a bigger install base, and is annihilating the PS3 in USA and will continue to do so. In the others region its a heated battle. Sony has Japan and always will.

Its stupid to use your own experience to judge the overall rates of anything. I really hope you are 13 or so or that you never attended college. Most of the people I know suprisingly own both equally does that mean Americans own the 360 and PS3 equally, Hell no.

Actually I'm 29 and attending college for a Computer Graphics Technology major. Before you try to assume that I don't know what I'm talking about and using my own personal experiences as an example is worthless you might want to polish up your grammar skills. It is a fact that the 360 has sold many more consoles in the USA which is exactly what I just said in my post. Hence I live in the USA therefore I know many more people who own a 360 compared to a PS3.

Wow I don't know what to say, 29 and still acting like a company represents you. I am not debating whether the 360 has sold more here, I don't care so much as your logic of using ones own experience to say something is true is very faulty. Also under your reasoning you make it sound as if you know every person in America.

I would love to have a battle of wits with you since you obviously don't have any, but of course it would be a waste of time. My reasoning was the 360 is winning NA, the biggest gaming market in the world, and therefore it is keeping the 360 ahead. Contrary to what you might believe most people don't own multiple 360s. The  most logical answer is the 360 has a bigger install base since it has sold the most consoles. Until you or anyone else has proof to show otherwise then this cannot be argued.

There you go sounding like a kid again. Also for your info I have been playing my 360 all night. Also i have brocken two ps3's the second one broke about 3 weeks ago and I have not broke a 360 so obviously people are replacing consoles on both sides. I also agree the 360 has a slightly bigger install base, but you are to hooked on the 360 and ned settle down. I own the 360, Wii and PS3 (when replaced) and am sick of your absolutist talk that 360 is the best and that Halo is the best. By the way I have been playing Halo: Combat evolved all night as I am replaying the series. PEACE!

Incidentally, software sales support the likelihood that the install base is still higher for the Xbox.

not necessarily, if the average ps3 user doesn't buy as many games as the average 360 one then even if the 360 has more software sales ps3 could easily have more working consoles in houses, and since people tend to buy most of their multiplats on 360 and alot of people use their ps3 for alot of reasons and gaming is kinda secondary not to mention 360 had a year so 360 owners would have longer to buy games so it's perfectly reasonable for 360 to sell more games then ps3  with a close install base

How is this thread not locked? Its such crap.

Going by shipped numbers a lone is ridiculous. I mean the title implies we're talking install base. Yet it shows shipped numbers?

yeah it shows the only accurate sales numbers in existence why on earth would someone use that?

Right, consoles sitting in shops counts as install base? Its just stupid.

no it doesn't, the difference between shipped reflects the most accurately the difference between sold, try to keep up theres a reason we keep using the words roughly and about

If that were the case wouldn't it mean that the 360 has the higher install base since it seems like more people are buying 360s vs the PS3 with more on shelves?

Not if their only buying it since their last one broke failed system aren't part of the install base but their impossible to track

One person wouldn't own multiple 360s but alot of familys/households have more then one and only buy one set of games

But why shops would have more PS3s sitting than 360s? Im not taking any side or saying VGchartz numbers are wrong, im really wandering why since both console sale at a similar rate. Im a sales manager myself (not in the video game business) we only keep more of stuff that sales more. Does Sony ask for bigger minimum order than Microsoft? Does Sony deserve more store than Microsoft?

Maybe MS just hasen't had the opportunity to flood the stores with consoles yet? Lets bear in mind the 360 is selling significantly better than the PS3 at the moment.

Ha ha ha, flood the stores.  These arguments are so funny.

True, as if its Sony or MS that decide how much consoles stores are to order. Tough, its possible Microsoft isnt able to fill all their orders at the moment. I guess thats what he meant.

The flooding one is my favorite.  Sony can't force stores to buy their system. It makes no sense at all and is hardly an argument.

You understand the context right? He was asking why are there more PS3s in shops than 360s.

Obviously the demand for 360 has been bigger. This may have everything to do with PS3 having more units in stock.

yes the PS3 has 2 million more in stores because the 360 sold more but wait the wii outsold both and doesn't have that much of a dif shipped could it be vg chartz numbers are just wrong...

Yeah but ps3s are around 3 million failed 360s are around 17 million (not counting multiple failures for the same person) so yes they are being replaced on both sides but alot more 360 are being replaced then ps3s especially with MS misleading ppl to think each new model which they barely changed anything somehow magically fixed the failrate

Technically you could say the same with the PS3. Not like those fail rarely or something. But as you said, it's impossible to track...

I did say the same about the ps3, I checked the failrate in the most recent study which is fairly accurate (500,000 participants everyone can only fill it out once) ps3s is around 8 360s is over 40, ps3 has about 3 million failed where 360 has about 17 million (not factoring in multiple failures for the same person because of all the variables) the numbers aren't perfectly accurate and it's impossible to tell how many have been repaired and resold as used or returned to owner (for both ps3 and 360) but it's fairly obvious that their is a significant possibility that ps3 has more working consoles in households

This is true, but my main point is this man is to caught up in one compony, Microsoft and that this crap. We all know the 360 had an early catastrophe with failure rates, my main point is to tell people to settle down and not be so biased towards one company. My PS3's have failed, seems logical since I used it more.

The 360's gigantic early failure rate is the only reason peoiple question if the currently opperating model is less than the PS3. It makes sense, but we don't need one sided opinions that state one console is greater than another. I am getting sick of this.

You might want to go back and reread my posts because you're wasting your time trying to prove a point to me. I'm making a case for the 360 to battle these ridiculous pro PS3 threads that have been popping up every hour the past 2 days. For example "Who do you think has the largest install base?," or "The PS3 has already caught up to the 360 and outsold it," or my personal favorite "Gran Turismo 1-4 has sold the entire Halo series."

You don't see these types of threads popping up for the 360 now do you? Why do the PS3 owners have such an inferiority complex? Why do you PS3 owners take this "console battle" so seriously? Does it actually give you physical pain that the 360 is selling better than the PS3?

Actually, his sentiment - though meant as a joke - is far less egregious than your lovely and thoughtful response.

Here's a thought for you... someone who doesn't like gaming isn't going to buy games just because they bought a PS3 as a BD player.

Next time, take off the fanboy goggles, turn on the sarcasm detector and take a deep breath.  Teh interwebz are more fun that way.

If they had no intention of using it for anything other then blu ray why the hell would they buy a ps3 instead of a player, they might have bought it primarily for blu ray and thought I can pick up the feel games I actually enjoy playing too, I seriously doubt there are any ps3 owners who have never bought or rented one game (aside from the ones that use it to make supercomputers) let alone 10 million

I know a lot of people who own PS3's and don't have a single game.

Over here Sony and other retailers were giving them away with new TVs. Not just Bravias either.

I remember the TV commercial saying they have 50,000 PS3s to give away, which is quite a big percentage considering the PS3 base in Australia.
