Homes go techno as Kiwis plug in to electronic games

"The report, commissioned by the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (iGEA) and carried out by Bond University on Queensland's Gold Coast, found that every Kiwi home with children under 18 had an electronic game device. New Zealand is the first Oceania nation to reach that figure. The study, which covered more than 1200 households, found the average player age was 33, and that 88.5 per cent of Kiwi homes had a device for playing interactive games.

The director of iGEA, Mark Goodacre, said the findings were surprising, but showed more families were playing games as a way to spend time together. "

I wouldn't call a 17-year old a "child", but that's a minor technicality.  Off the top my head I can't think of one family that doesn't have a gaming console, or a PC that the kids sometimes use for games. And a majority of families I know have a gaming console and a PC. I think there's one family I know that could technically be a zero electronic gaming family, they have a PC but I don't think it's ever used for games, not even the kiddie / educational games .

88.5% of homes have some sort of interactive gaming device (my 70-year old mother included, who plays Spider solitaire on her laptop A LOT, possibly for more hours on average than I game). I'm assuming in many cases it's a PC rather than a console, and in some cases it'll be a plug'n'play device with a fixed number of games. I also assume a lot of houses still only have a PS2 as the only gaming console, as this study isn't limited to current gen consoles. I would think the chances of a house only having a GC or XB or older gen consoles is pretty miniscule though there might still be a few around.

wow they really love their games!

I know several that don't, all with just girls.  I wonder whether this is just 1200 households plus 1200 consoles=every household has a console though.

A device for playing interactive games could be a pc/laptop, ipod, mobile phone or even SkyTV so i'm suprised it's not higher than 88.5%.  I'm guessing they're not including kids toys as interactive games.

Impressive considering they pay so much per game for their games, full priced new ps3 and 360 games there are $130nz (around $90 U.S)

Thought then again it is hard to think of a household here (australia) that doesn't have a pc, Even my girl-friends who wouldn't be caught dead touching a console have pc's at home so that is quite a low figure

I live in NZ and regularly purchase games and I can tell you right now the average price of a new game is between $90 - $100 NZD ($63-$70 USD). These figures really don't surprise me as New Zealand is very much a tech saavy nation full of people who must have the latest piece of cool technology that comes out.

The price has definitely dropped over the last 12 months, I guess due to the NZD not dropping as much as other currencies.  The standard release price now seems to be $99, with a few being $88.  That's mainly in JB Hifi though, EB Games still sticker games at $119/$129.
