Forums - General - Obama throws support behind controversial Islamic Center

If hypothetically a Mosque wasn't allowed two blocks near ground zero, what would the appropriate distance be?

There has to be some sort of bounderies, shouldn't there?

OT: As much as I think this is disrespectful, the constitution allows the Muslims every right to do so. May not help the reputation of the Muslims, but they are allowed to under the law, and forcing them not to build a mosque there is a direct violation to the constitution.

All this does is make *some* people hate muslims even more.

Surely it is against their best intentions for a more democratic tollerant America to build it this close? Constitution of freedom or not, people will find it disrepectful and it will go against its "proposed" aim for providing unity. When in truth, it will divide the peoples even further...

Bloomberg had a similar point against those protesting this, he said "where's the limit?" or something like that. Is there a "Ground Zero Observation Zone" that will be officially demarcated where nothing potentially offensive to the memory of 9/11 will be allowed?

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

they have the right to build it, just like we have the right to make a website just to draw pictures of Muhammad that is only intended to piss of Muslims.  Both of those are protected, you can call it insensitive but it is an important freedom that Americans have.

This is really only an issue if you let it get you angry, extreme muslims can only "win" if you let them think that they won.  If they think it is a symbol of victory, and you say it's a symbol of freedom then they can't win.  In fact the Mosque being built there represents the same freedoms that makes me proud of America.  For the same reasons the gay bar is just as welcome.

So if the building of the mosque/centre would be offensive to those(or the families of those) who died, i'm guessing no Muslims died on 9/11?

there are some 50 muslims that died in 911, there are also many muslims fighting for the USA in Iraq and Afghanistan.

LoL. So Freedom of religion, except for the religions we don't like? The moment you put parameters and disqualifiers on one thing, the whole thing becomes hypocritical or irrelevant.I'm agnostic, so I can care less, however our President did the right thing in upholding and interpreting the constitutional right of any religious group to take this course of action. Would it be any different if a synagogue were to be built 2 blocks from the WTC? I'm a New Yorker, not religious, and see no issue or controversy in what is happening here.

If anything I see much ado about nothing, to keep eyes looking one way while the shit we're supposed to be informed about goes unnoticed.

I'm not even convinced it was supposed islamic terrorists who attacked the US that day. Too many unanswered questions, too much rush to judgements and too many unprecedented events. Any time the word unprecedented turns up..I'm suspicious.

Nah,  if that was the truth their would be also a lot of drama when the other 30 mosque's opened..

So you think there'd be this 'controversy' if there was to be a church or synagogue built two blocks from WTC? I highly doubt that.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Agreed

I normally hate Obama for his stupidity on a lot of things. He scored some points for his stand for what this country stands for.

We should have the same people who are building on the 9/11 site build the Islamic Center. At there level of efficiency, no one will remember what 9/11 was by the time they are done.
