Forums - Sony - What does PS3 need to do to Comeback?

Wow, did somebody honestly say the ps3 can no longer outsell the 360?  If Microsoft does what they did with Xbox, they will just stop production of everything 360 basically right after the new console comes out, and ps3 will pass it right up with ease.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Musts: $50 Price Cut and bring 160-320gb models(including White 160gb model) to America and Others

Not needed but would help: announce Resistance 3 and ICO and SOTC HD, Splinter Cell Trilogy HD, Prince of Persia Trilogy HD

Announcements don't sell consoles. Resistance 3 being the 3rd game in the series won't sell consoles. Ico and SOTC were niche games on PS2, they'll be niche on PS3. Dunno anything about Splinter Cell trilogy, but by the looks of the SC games already on PS3 it probably wouldn't do much for HW sales. PoP seems like a franchise past its time.

Sony doesn't need to do anything right now, given 360 is enjoying a pre-holiday boost from its clearance sale and new sku. And it would seem that Wii is suffering more from 360's high sales than PS3. 360 will ride that wave into the Spet/Oct period when sales start climbing naturally (360 will more or less stay at it's end of Aug sales level) and both Wii and PS3 will reel it back in as their sales also start to rise to meet and in the case of Wii at least, over take it. Reach will have a 2 week boost affect at most, and it won't be huge like the 360s launch. It'll come down to whether Kinect moves HW or whether it mostly sells to existing 360 owners. Once Sony knows what effect Kinect has on 360 sales it can then decide what it needs to do to keep get back to growing it's market share.

Makes sense.

yeah i think your right, no need for a price cut at the moment. even if 360 outsells PS3 this year, it wont be a fatal blow. personally i think move needs to be cheaper to encourage on the fence potential buyers. the big thing that could change the game completely is if exclusive IPs like Mass Effect were to come over to the PS3. the reason i say ME because microsoft sold EA the distribution rights and EA arent interested in exclusives, not to mention the game hasnt been a system seller on the 360. other than that, EPIC did also mention they regret having an exclusive contract with microsoft for Gears... so i think that if Portal 2 proves to be a success on PS3, we could be in for some supprises next year!!!

So you are saying Mass Effect would be a PS3 seller but not a 360 seller? And Epic regrets selling 10 million copies of the Gears of War series? If thats the case then every single dev regrets being exclusive on the PS3 since Gears has sold more than any exclusive ip on the PS3. Try using some logic before typing.

Seriously though GT5, Advertising, and $50-1$00 dollar price cut = Sony selling tons of PS3s for a LOOONNNG time.

it appears 'logic' dosent appear in the 360 fanboy vocabulary. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=232359

http://www.next-gen.biz/news/epic-it’s-getting-harder-to-remain-independent

theres probabily more stuff out there. and i'm sure edge reported at one point that epic publically stated they couldve addressed a much larger market with gears had they have not signed the contract with microsoft. but i cant be bothered doing the leg work for you!!

and yeah i am saying that Mass Effect on PS3 would be a huge come back, because RPGs sell on the console. by launching Mass Effect on the PS3, sony give bioware a massive oppertunity to market in Japan, something microsoft cannot do. not to mention the western sales of FF13 and other RPGs tend to be more successful on PS3 than 360. Mass Effect 1&2 have sold a lot less in the EU than in the US, so i think theres also an oppertunity there for the PS3 to make a come back with a strong IP, that hasnt enjoyed as much success as in the US with the 360.

thats right, games sales outside of the US are also important!... "try using some logic before you type"

PS. popularity is also very important, not just sales. Gabe Newell of Valve announcing Portal 2 for the PS3 was a huge hit for E3 and the fans. even though that might not become the next 10mil seller, its still a comeback for the console.

What is the best and most logical thing sony can do right now to get PS3 even with xbox 360 again?

Releasing sales numbers on a weekly basis to show it does outsell the 360.

Sorry but Mass Effect isn't a JRPG with prepubescent characters running around with magic powers trying to save the world. A WRPG is not going to sell in Japan even if it was on the PS3.

I'm going to use some reverse logic on you since you like it so much. If Killzone released on the 360 it would have sold twice as much since the US is the biggest market for FPSs and the 360 has a much larger user base than the PS3. Guerilla Games would have been much more successful going the 360 route.

And now you are quoting Pachter with your links? Pachter thinks that Epic games "regrets" 360 exclusivity. There is not one single word from anyone that works with Epic studios quoting this. Once again your logic fails.

There is a link for you to read. If they really "regretted" it then they could just port Gears 3 over to the PS3 if they wanted since technically MS doesn't own the rights to Gears 3. Looks like Epic is perfectly fine with outselling any PS3 exclusive.

Like i said already popularity is also very important, not just sales. Gabe Newell of Valve announcing Portal 2 for the PS3 was a huge hit for E3 and the fans. even though that might not become the next 10mil seller, its still a comeback for the console. or when Square Enix announced FF13 going to the 360, even though it hasnt sold more than 1.5mil , its been a huge boon for the console.

again, like i've already said (yawn) the US isnt the only gaming market. something like ME could enjoy considerable success in the EU or JP where it hasnt sold as much as in the US on the 360. not to mention i think gears and ME could be massive come back for the console, in the same way FF13 was a huge bomeshell at E3 when it was announced to be multiplatform.

so i dont understand why your talking about the sales of Killzone 3!? like i've already said Mass Effect and Gears would be a huge come back for PS3. i never said that they would sell like 10m copies or launch PS3 console sales into the stratosphere. i understand that perphaps it was far too complex to understand.

and about Epic, i dont work for them, i dont care what they do etc. but we'll see what they do with there next game. just to break that down, i think that a game released multiplatform will sell more than if that same game was released exclusively. a lot of developers are opting for multiplatform development now, i wouldnt be supprised if epic choose to do the same with there next game.

I skimmed this thread and saw mass effect being mentioned.

that game wouldn't move any consoles if it came to ps3. it would just make some ps3 owners happy.

ME2 really deserved more sales (imo) but i don't think the franchise would have any effect on sales.

I think a price cut with some great games bundled with the ps3 would be the best thing but i don't think sony should cut the price of the console just to increase sales at the cost of profiting on sold  consoles.

What does the PS3 need to do to make a comeback?  Nothing, its sales are doing fine right now.  Who gives a sheot what place it comes in, the system is respectable with good games out and coming.  I have a feeling that both the 360 and the PS3 will beat the Wii this Christmas (sales wise) unless the Wii makes a decent sized price cut.

Even with this 360s sales boost the PS3 is selling quite well, and these things seem to run in cycles anyway.  So for the time being the 360 is pulling ahead.  Something will happen to change that around for Sony and then back to the 360 after that.  Either way neither the 360 nor the PS3 is doing poorly so everyone should really be happy.

Since M$ and Sony both want to extend this Gen as long as possible, I expect to see the cycle turn around several times from here to the end.  And I would imagine second place will really mean very little to either company.  Both just want to see healthy profits so they can make another console in the future.

The only thing I see that may change this is if Kinect changes the game for Microsoft.  If that happens, then everything I just said  goes out the window.
