Forums - General Discussion - Every M. Night Shyamalan movie is worse than the last (says MetaCritic)

I thought his first three were good, but he really went downhill after that. The 64 for 6th Sense seems pretty harsh.

He's great and I can't wait for Devil.

i havent seen The Last Airbender and the ads make it look good plus there no way it can be as bad as the dragon ball movie

Inception has a score of 75 in Metacritic. WTF ?

The sixth sense is also financially his most successful film.

Wide Awake- 5 million Loss.

Sixth Sense- 632 million Profit.

Unbreakable- 173 million profit.

Signs- 336 million Profit.

Lady in The Water- 3 million Loss.

The Happening- 103 million Profit.

The Last Airbender- 33 million Profit (so far.)

Even if the reviews are awful, he's sold a lot of tickets, and that's all the stuidos probably care about. We'll have to wait and see how The Last Airbender performs, but he hasn't had a big hit since Signs.

To go from directing something that was nominated for 6 academy awards to directing a film nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Actor and Worst Director (The Happening) is quite a drop though.

Sixth Sense was a great movie... I liked Unbreakable a lot too, and Signs was suspenseful, though really stupid if you thought about it(still enjoyable though, IMO). But these metascores seem off. I think Rottentomatoes is a better indicator...

As for if he can do worse... The Happening was a  tough act to follow, but he did it with the Last Airbender. Can he do it again? The smart money says no, that making a worse movie is virtually impossible... but he seems up to the task of trying.

his first three movies were fine, but The Village is where things started going awry. I mean it didn't get as good of scores, though people weren't really bashing him for it. However when Lady in the Water was released it was little more than an act of artistic hubris with him throwing a tantrum over critics. And The Happening was just plain BAD. Now with him butchering Avatar with that godawful...THING I seriously wonder if his career is over. Last Aribender hasn't even made back it's marketing budget yet so I'm getting the feeling that Viacom is going to tell him to take a hike with wanting to make anymore Avatar movies.

You're confusing Shyamalan with Christopher Nolan.

On-topic: Other than The Sixth Sense he's made nothing memorable.

I really loved the Sixth sense and Unbreakable - like many I thought he was destined to be one of the greats after those two films but Signs was a bit weak, the Village I didn't enjoy and I haven't even seen the others.

One note here though - anything over 60 is actually a pretty good score on Meta for films. I'd suggest using IMDB instead and the user ratings, although I think you'd see the same pattern the scores in absolute terms should be a lot higher. I think the Sixth Sense and Unbreakable deserve to be considered as great films even if the rest aren't!

I personally like to check rottentomatoes.com

1999: The Sixth Sense, 85%
2000: Unbreakable, 68%
2002: Signs, 74%
2004: The Village, 42%
2006: Lady in the Water, 24%
2008: The Happening, 18%
2010: The Last Airbender, 7%

Everything ove 60% is considered fresh.

I have only seen The Sixth Sense, Signs and the Village. All three were among the worst films I've ever seen.
