Forums - Microsoft - Oh CRAP. I broke my HDD.

Guys I'm distraught.

I dropped my 360 HDD down a flight of 6 stairs. It is not smashed at all, but I plugged it back in, and the damn thing E68 on me. I have lost all my bloody game saves.

Is there any chance this tin foil thing will work?

I just wanna extract my saves so I dont have to lose everything.

Seems unlikely, but you could try attaching it to other devices to see if it will connect to those. But if its broke I'd wave goodbye to your data.

3. Then put it back to TV
4. Connect your controller

And it works :)"

I'm using HDMI so that wont apply.

It works without the HDD.

I'm screwed. I'm gonna open the HDD tommorrow and check it out.

That sucks man.  Odds are you've damaged the sensitive mechanisms inside the HD, meaning the disk no longer spins/reads.  If you want to test this theory, try doing this.  At least this way you can tell if the drive is still readable, and you may be able to recover your data to your PC.

Otherwise, there are people who specialize in recovering data from dead/physically damaged HDD's, but its fairly pricey and probably not worth it.

Or if you yourself are very technically savvy, you could buy the exact same model HDD and carefully swap the interior discs.  Although you run the risk of ruining both HD's if you screw it up.

Best of luck

Yep. Taking to a mates house and went to put it in my bag whilst rushing. I live on top floor, and wallah, missed my bag and down the gap it went.

Bugger. I will feel better if  can get my save data. The Gamerscore is easily recoverable. But the saved games ( lots of them ) arent.

Just borrow a friend's AV cable because that method does work. At least then you'll be able to transfer your save files to a usb.

I don't think you're going to have much luck with any methods discussed here, if you physically dropped a HDD then chances are it's completely locked up now, with that kind of fall you have surely done damage the the read/write heads and probably misaligned the platters, or at the very least damaged them in some regard. Really the only way you could recover that data is by paying someone a lot of money. I'd suggest trying any methods possible, but don't open your drive unless you know exactly what you're doing, because you can mess it up worse.
