Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why are people so threatened by the Wii?

Delusional said:
i think the only thing people feel threatened is by wii's sales numbers. because the higher those numbers are, the less likely their console of choice would win the "console war".

And with that, this thread is over.

People place far too much emphasis on their purchasing decisions. When someone says they favor an alternative purchasing decision (like buying a different console than they did), it sets off that primal part of the human mind which attempts to drive a wedge between itself and other humans.

Humans have done this for centuries, mostly with religion, but the idea is all the same: if someone holds an opposing viewpoint to you, they are a threat.

If the Wii becomes the dominant next-gen console, it not only means that more games will go to it but also has a lot to do with the general feeling of being the minority, and nothing sends fans into a defensive frenzy like realizing that there are more of the other guys than there are of them.

It's a basic human instinct and while it would be nice if people would rise above their base instincts, it hasn't happened in thousands of years of human existence so I see no reason why it would happen now.

People should be happy about the Wii: it's breathing new life into a gaming market which was starting to stagnate and die. Game sales have been steadily decreasing over the past few years and it was the DS which was actually pushing the market back in the other direction.

In the long run, both Sony and MS will benefit from the Wii's influence because it is pulling new people into gaming and some of those people will decide to buy one of their consoles.

So don't hate the Wii. When the next generation comes (or maybe even this one), Sony and MS will have motion-sensing controllers of their own and will be doing a lot of the same things that Nintendo is now, and if that scares or offends you, I don't know what to tell you other than that this is the only way.

Either the market can expand or it can slowly shrink to a niché, and that means fewer games for everyone.

"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks

I actually hope not, and I am a Wii fan, the key with Wii is diversity on the consol market. If next xbox or playstation goes for separate motion sensors as Wii, I think the industy has missed the point. We as games should have more choice and more important the gaiming industry needs to expand, a lot. How many billions of people doesn't watch movies? Why doesn't the consol gaiming audience have 1 billion users yet? It should be possible. If this gen is so succesfull that all three consols sells at least 100 millions, I will be very happy!

I could be wrong but I suspect that one of the biggest things that keeps people away from gaming is the current attitudes of hard-core gamers. Any videogame idea which could expand the market is usually looked down upon by the hard-core, and any movement to keep system and game development costs reasonable for non-gamers is (once again) rejected by the hard-core.

Motion sensing hasn't replaced standard gaming and I don't think it will. That aside, I don't see how it hurts standard gaming either. Played Godfather on Wii? The controls make the game insanely enjoyable without it being a workout. As long as practical applications use some of the motion controls without using all of them, I don't think it will be an issue.

It's simple, they feel threatened because it sells better, they fear they will lost their money(which is a lot for a PS3 or 360), if the wii stops selling well and the PS3 go over the Wii they won't feel threatened anymore. This case does not apply to every 360/PS3 user, everybody bought the console which they think is going to win(in this early stage) and some people bought their console because the games that will come out for their console surely. If the wii wins they probably have lost most of the games that were suppose to be on 360/PS3. That's why.

PS360N64 you really behave like a 5 year old child that is defending his favourite toy... calm down again nobody said Nintendo had a monopoly on Fun. You completly misread what Wiigirl said she was just annoyed about you saying the Wii is so much worse than any other console because of dozens of stupid reasons... that´s not fun to discuss anymore and it isn´t even a discussion at this point in time. It´s just you and your favourite toy. And your hate to all gamers who prefer another console... sorry I´m to tired to get through your hundreds of points now I just wanted to say you didn´t "hammer" anyone... you just behave like a crazy guy at least in my opinion.

Now shout at me I´ll go eating something

0/4 I am still winning. I don't need to continue hammering people, my other post stating my points more than stands on it's own right now. :)

Next time read all posts instead of skimming, try reading her first post to see her claims.

If you guys want to keep this thread alive, stop attacking PS360N64PSXBOX and others. If this stays as a "let's bash fanboys" thread, I don't really see the point.

I'm not attacking but rather being attacked. Yeah, single me out..

This whole thread is about attacking Sony/MS fans, if you hadn't noticed...Pretty much what everybody is doing..

I think PS3 fanboys are in the various stages of grief right now

First stage is denial - Look how great the launch went. It's the most successful launch in their history. Europe sold like gangbusters. Wait til good games are released, they will revive sales.

Second stage is anger - I hate the simpleton games of the Wii and DS. The other systems are so weak, they don't deserve success.

Third stage is bargaining - It doens't matter how successful the PS3 is because Blu-ray will win.

Fourth stage is depression - If Nintendo wins it will be the end of gaming as we know it.

Fifth stage is acceptance - They have sold enough to do great things. Losing market share doesn't matter.

Just bumping this.................................

Nope, It's fanboys. Try staying in a room full of them and see the immaurity and attacks. They make non-gamers see the industry as childish and gamers get ashamed of being in it. Too bad a lot of hardcore gamers are fanboys.

Hey 360 do you consider yourself a fanboy?

Me? HELL NO! I haven't been a fanboy since I was 9! Ever since the sega genesis came out I have always wanted and over time got all systems that were a success. This is the first gen were I don't want one of the main systems. In fact, I hate fanboys. I have since last gen when people starting attacking xbox owners..(Sony fans)...I was PSXBOXGC last gen...PS2, Xbox, Gamecube......PS2 and Xboc were my favorites....But RE4 for GC was good and kicked the unholy monkey hell out of the PS2 version...BLECH!!!!!!
