i think the only thing people feel threatened is by wii's sales numbers. because the higher those numbers are, the less likely their console of choice would win the "console war".

And with that, this thread is over.

People place far too much emphasis on their purchasing decisions. When someone says they favor an alternative purchasing decision (like buying a different console than they did), it sets off that primal part of the human mind which attempts to drive a wedge between itself and other humans.

Humans have done this for centuries, mostly with religion, but the idea is all the same: if someone holds an opposing viewpoint to you, they are a threat.

If the Wii becomes the dominant next-gen console, it not only means that more games will go to it but also has a lot to do with the general feeling of being the minority, and nothing sends fans into a defensive frenzy like realizing that there are more of the other guys than there are of them.

It's a basic human instinct and while it would be nice if people would rise above their base instincts, it hasn't happened in thousands of years of human existence so I see no reason why it would happen now.

People should be happy about the Wii: it's breathing new life into a gaming market which was starting to stagnate and die. Game sales have been steadily decreasing over the past few years and it was the DS which was actually pushing the market back in the other direction.

In the long run, both Sony and MS will benefit from the Wii's influence because it is pulling new people into gaming and some of those people will decide to buy one of their consoles.

So don't hate the Wii. When the next generation comes (or maybe even this one), Sony and MS will have motion-sensing controllers of their own and will be doing a lot of the same things that Nintendo is now, and if that scares or offends you, I don't know what to tell you other than that this is the only way.

Either the market can expand or it can slowly shrink to a niché, and that means fewer games for everyone.
I actually hope not, and I am a Wii fan, the key with Wii is diversity on the consol market. If next xbox or playstation goes for separate motion sensors as Wii, I think the industy has missed the point. We as games should have more choice and more important the gaiming industry needs to expand, a lot. How many billions of people doesn't watch movies? Why doesn't the consol gaiming audience have 1 billion users yet? It should be possible. If this gen is so succesfull that all three consols sells at least 100 millions, I will be very happy!

I could be wrong but I suspect that one of the biggest things that keeps people away from gaming is the current attitudes of hard-core gamers. Any videogame idea which could expand the market is usually looked down upon by the hard-core, and any movement to keep system and game development costs reasonable for non-gamers is (once again) rejected by the hard-core.

Nope, It's fanboys. Try staying in a room full of them and see the immaurity and attacks. They make non-gamers see the industry as childish and gamers get ashamed of being in it. Too bad a lot of hardcore gamers are fanboys.
