Forums - Sales - Okay we got to discuss this - Wii/Sales

Oh crap, I pushed wrong button so once again:

Yeah, they do name their games differently. Wii sports, wii sports resort and what next, wii sports extreme? How about mario party 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9? Pokemons?

Could you tell me what did they innovate lately? Motion controls? Not their innovation, they just copied the existing idea/technology. 3d gaming? Not their innovation either.

How is kinect copying nintendo? Do they have a motion tracking camera?

Every company cares about the profits. Nintendo could not get enough (any?) profits with GC and they knew they could not compete with Sony and MS to lesser extent. They had to do something different.

Wii Sports Resort is almost a completely different game from Wii Sports. They created a load of new content for that game and really made something a lot better than the original.

Mario Party and Pokemon are not directly made by Nintendo, they are made by outside companies and are simply published by Nintendo.

Kinect is copying Nintendo in content. Why do you think the core was so harshly criticizing Microsoft after E3? Because they had a chance to make something new with Kinect, but instead opted to recreate Wii Sports, Mario Kart, and Nintendogs.

And sure, every company cares about profits. They want to be in the green and be able to grow. Cash flow is the blood of a business, without it, the business dies. However, I do not think a company's main purpose is simply to make money and nothing else. You don't see mission statements like this, and the company that does operate this way usually has a quick death.

Nintendo's main business is gaming. They don't have operating systems or electronics to sustain them. Gaming is not just something they are dabbling in, it is their main purpose for existing as a company.

The fact that they resurrected gaming from the grave back in the 80's shows how they approach their business. The fact that they are expanding gaming now to a mass market with the Wii is further evidence.

If Nintendo were to go out of business and leave gaming, the game industry would slowly wither and die. Sony and Microsoft would not care because they would simply move back to their REAL businesses.

The Wii should gain more sales in the Autumn/Winter period, however the Wii (as well as every other console this generation) will face the inevitable fate of death in the coming years (2012 is most likely) and the cycle of video games' generations will continue.

Well, saying Nintendo cares more about gaming than profits is obviously misleading. However, saying they care more about gaming than short-term profits may not be inaccurate. For Nintendo, gaming is everything - gaming is their future, so the state of it means everything to their long-term success.

We can't say Sony or MS doesn't care about the state of gaming, as I'm sure the game divisions definitely do. However, when it comes to pushing gaming as a medium, I feel like Nintendo is way ahead of the pack (in their methods, anyway). They're the ones trying to make a gamer out of everyone, with them displaying stuff like graphs of the social acceptance of video games... With a cause like that, profit oriented or not, I think it's a struggle worth cheering them on for.

Pretty much spot on there. I'd just add that Nintendo have always been a gaming company first and foremost. Even in the pre-video game days they were making playing cards, so gaming is to thank for their very existence... Meanwhile, Sony are an electronics company, and Microsoft are a computer software company. They both decided to enter the video games industry after seeing others become successful as an attempt to increase their worth and get a piece of the pie.

So if we're going to start talking about which company 'cares' more about gaming, you can't really argue against it being Nintendo unless you revise a hell of a lot of history.

That said, they'll all care about profits, as that's what business is about.

Sony took a loss on the PS3 so they could shove Blu-Ray down everybody's throats, force everyone to repurchase all their movies, and push everybody to buy expensive HD television sets that they didn't need. Now they are trying to do the same with their 3D televisions.

Did sony piss on your cereal or something?

Believe it or not I use to like Sony. I was a huge fan of the original Playstation. But when I saw this my entire confidence in them was shattered:

Heh, the "Giant Enemy Crab" part never gets old.  Actually "Riiiidge Racer!" is even more classic.

Well said. Yeah, I agree. Of course they care about profits, but they know they have to serve gaming as a medium to get those massive profits.

Sony took a loss on the PS3 because it is not their main business. Their main business is Electronics. The only reason they are in the game business is to support their electronics business. Do you remember why the PS3 was so expensive in the first place? That's right, Blu-Ray.

Sony took a loss on the PS3 so they could shove Blu-Ray down everybody's throats, force everyone to repurchase all their movies, and push everybody to buy expensive HD television sets that they didn't need. Now they are trying to do the same with their 3D televisions.

Nintendo, on the other hand, doesn't have any other divisions, their focus is all on gaming. They CAN'T take a loss because they don't have anything else to support them.

LOL.  Sure, I'll agree they used the PS3 to trojan horse in bluray, but people didn't HAVE to buy a PS3 if they thought it was too expensive or didn't want bluray (and a lot of people didn't buy a PS3 for those reasons).

You do understand that bluray players play DVDs right?  So there is no need to rebuy all your movies unless you want to.

But many people may have wanted a PS3 for the games and not the blu-ray. What about them?

And this goes back to my original point that Sony doesn't care about the games, they simply care about selling electronics (as they should since they are an electronics company).

This is what you get when you cater to people who aren't gamers. They made their money and success off people who don't care about the industry. The type of people who only buy what's "trendy" and "cool". Those people have very short attention spans and they're moving on.

The core gamers, the ones who made their company what it is today, the ones who have been on board since the NES/SNES days, they've mostly moved on so it's not like Nintendo can just switch it up and say "we're sorry". It's too late and so, they're going to have to lay in the bed they made.

Hopefully they learn their lesson next generation.

This, this and THIS!

I've been a Nintendo fan for ages. Actually, since I was 3 years old I have been playing Nintendo consoles ONLY, started out with the NES in '88. My first non-Nintendo console was the PS2, and that was mostly because of GTA 3. This generation, Nintendo gave me a big "fuck you", and started sucking off casual gamers for money. They forgot all about me and my many YEARS of loyal support through thick and thin. You fucked up Nintendo, and I hope this will hurt you bad. You don't forget the people who made you who you are, you cater to them and listen to them. Their new "fanbase" are just a bunch of casual wankers who doesn't have any idea of what you as a company really are. You are basically selling your console and games to people who don't really give a shit about you as a company or any of your classic gaming franchises, and that will move on to the next new fad in a couple of years.

I will give them second chance, and I will buy the next Nintendo console, but they will have to show some major improvement and fan service to win my respect back. I actually base LOADS of my purchases on loyalty, respect and principles. If I do not respect a company, I don't give a rats ass if their product is a life saver, I will never give them a cent. I know companies only want my money, but some of them actually makes me feel happy about giving them money for the product/service I get, because I respect them. Nintendo and most definitely the Wii is not in this group at the moment.
