Forums - PC - Help building a Gaming Rig

You can shed $35 if you go for 2GB of RAM. Quite frankly most gamers won't need more for the time being unless they intend to multitask whilst gaming:

$40 $3 shipping case

$50 but $30 after MIR Corsair 400W PSU

Total savings with two options:

$95

Which brings your system to roughly $600 after MIR including Windows 7.

Not bad huh?

Edit: Which means if you get Windows 7 for cheap, you could switch cases and go for a faster Phenom II processor if you wanted.

okay i added everything you had there except the mobo and ended up with $696. So do you think i should go for the mobo you listed? If i do i will have enough for a mouse and keyboard. Is the amd 965 worth $70 more?

Or if you want pretty LED lights but still pay less overall then : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133176 is also a good product.

It was the best value one I could find which balanced price / reasonable quality and features from the 5 minutes I could allocate to find one.

So whats the deal with the Windows 7, how much will that cost you? Also which case do you prefer of the 3 I have listed so far?

I personally don't think you'd notice the difference with that CPU. You'd need a high end $1000 gaming setup to even begin to notice the difference.

the windows 7 will cost me about $30. Okay i will get that cpu. But in the future though won't some games require 3 ghz. Like The old republic already requies 2.6 or 2.8 ghz to play (i think, not sure). Eventually games like crysis 2 will require at least 3 ghz right? Oh and i prefer the 1st choice since it is quiet, and includes a good psu. I should have no problem fitting all of this in right?

Well a good compromise is the Phenom 945 I believe for $130ish if you're concerned about it. It uses less power than similar Phenoms so should be a good balance between performance and running costs and noise. Anyhow games will require more cores in the future so roughly speaking that Athlon II 2.8Ghz is about 2.8 2.8 2.8 2.8 = 10Ghz equivalent or so, I can't be bothered with the maths.

okay so i should be future proof with the processor? so should i go for the $130 one ore $100 one?

WHat do you guys think of this cpu and mother board

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.456515

That CPU is great. With an aftermarket passive cooler you can overclock it up to 4Ghz.

But that mobo is complete garbage.

Get a mobo that supports SLI or crossfire.

If I was bulding a 700 dollar gaming rig, Id build the following.

AMD Phenom 965 Cpu - 180 bucks

Average SLI mobo - ~130 bucks

GTX 460 - 200 bucks

650 Watt PSU - 50 bucks

Basic antec case - 40 bucks

4 GB of ram - 100 bucks

err...there goes 700 and we're still missing hard drive, OS, DVD rom, keyboard and mouse...not to mention monitor if you don't have one.

Damn, all those people saying that you can build a gaming computer under 600 bucks are nuts. Im looking at you Shio...

Well you don't need a 200 bucks graphics card or a $180 CPU, there are motherboards cheaper than that, and no one says that you can build a gaming computer for under $600 including the monitor. Excluding the monitor, yes.

Well... The processor is already future proofed given it has 4 cores and most games only use two. So the $130 one is extra future proofing.

If you have the budget I would say go with the Phenon, I selected the Athlon because I figured you needed to have Windows 7 for full OEM price. My reasoning is this: You'll switch graphics chips more than once if you continue to play games on it over the coming years, you'll probably never have to swith the CPU before you'll want a completely new motherboard etc anyway, so make the CPU count. Also its wayyy more frustrating to be CPU limited in games than being GPU limited, because you can't just turn settings down.
