Forums - Sales - So, the gap is less than 3M now.

HAHA

I have to admit PS3 enjoyed a surge in sales the last 7 months or so thans to their PS3 slim and lower cost.. but you know.. it really looks like the benefits of that surge will soon be deleted by Microsoft who has done the same thing.  Their slim XB360 looks like its sales will benefit it tremendously now through the holiday season... combine that with upcoming platinum selling titles.. up coming Halo reach ( 8 weeks to go and already more then 115K preordered) and up coming Gears of War..

I don't know why Sony fanboys alays make a big deal of the PS3's sales numbers, to be quite frank all that matters is they are no longer number one, they no longer have control of the best game developers ( which is why you find the best titles available on other consoles and not just theirs ) and the real kicker is Microsoft is getting real big dollars from XB LIVE with 23 million members ( back in like 2007 it was like 7 million) and they keep making it better..and usable to real people in day to day life by adding things like ESPN coming soon.. they had Netflix on their an entire year before the mighty Sony added it.. You'd think Sony with all their movie buddies and bluray would've been all over it, but they are showing that success truely is a menace ( as Bill Gates said ).. it fools smart people into beleiving they can't fail.. Sony got cocky.. they also lost alot of sale sin their consumer electronics divisions.  Anyone see how much they lost in computers compared to 5 yrs ago?

So the somehow the gap is decreasing while the  360 has been outselling the PS3 WW for the past month? We won't know anything to the end of 2010. And where's the Wii sales in all of this? Is the PS3-Wii gap decreasing too?

Wii sold 3.07m last quarter if I'm not mistaken, so it still outsold the PS3 by some 670k.

However, I think PS3 managed to outsell Wii 09' numbers - 2.24m or something like that. Somehow they were that low back there, which is surprising to me.

Actually It's not *looks at VGChartz figures*

It's just that simple.

Except that the whole point of this site is to track how many consumers have actually bought the hardware, not how many are consoles are sitting in warehouses and store shelves worldwide.

I don't see it like that.

I like this site not because it provides consumer numbers, but because the numbers are weekly, and that there are numbers for so many things.

So just because I am a member here and use shipments as official sales, doesn't mean I'm in the wrong.

PS3 sales surged thanks to slim PS3 and lower prices.

Now Xbox 360 is doing the same.  Anyone checked out their ridiculous numbers the last few weeks?  I'm betting they reverse Sony's surge and extend their lead back to 6 million in the next year.  The new Halo and other big titles will be helping XB360 ALOT this holiday season !

That is sold to customers, shipped numbers are what they sell to retailers.

What matters is profit and market share, quite frankly. Sony and MS have both failed here.

Spin is everything by the way.

You may say 'Anyone see how much they lost in computers compared to 5 yrs ago?'

I may say 'Sony has just came through one of their toughest periods ever without much loss and are now back to profit'

Well, I said this before.. I beleive Sony did play catch up some due to the slim line PS3 and lower price..

I just now used VG chartz own hardware comparison chart and looking at the last 6 weeks.. Im pretty sure Xbox 360 will again break away because they now have a slimline out and a lower price point on their entry level XB 360..

Changing the week won' tmatter much, but if you choose from end to mid May to now (Jul 24th) the Xb360 sold has outsold the PS3 by nearly 500 million units.  We can all debate this and Jim and whoever can put whatever "spin" they want on this.. but its VERY CLEAR the NEW XBOX 360 Slim is C L E A R L Y outselling even the Nintendo Wii the last few weeks in most countries.. so at this moment in time I don't think MS is too concerned.  MS also has strong titles coming just in time for the holidays folks.. Halo 3 has sold nearly 12 million copies.. that roughly 700 million dollars and halo reach comes out in 8 weeks..

Do you know what happens when products are overshipped?

They get shipped back to the manufacturer. Or are heavily discounted, or are dumped or any number of things.

Shipment figures are useful, but they aren't the whole picture when looking at the demand of a product to consumers.

And that happens how often?

They aren't the whole picture, they are the best overall picture.
