Forums - General - Arizona "your papers please" immigration law

NJ5 said:

I've read a few mentions of the new law in Arizona that allows police officers to ask anyone for papers proving they're not illegal immigrants, whenever the police suspects you might be an illegal immigrant.

This is quite troubling. Not because of anything related to immigration itself, but just the idea that if one doesn't have papers on them they can be detained. Sounds too much like a movie about Nazi Germany, Gestapo or something like that asking for "ze papers please".

I couldn't find any discussion about this, and was wondering what others here think about it.

Tighter immigration laws. Reduce immigration rates. Police need to be enforcing the law and arresting the criminal and terrorists. The police are doing their job. These freeloading illegal immigrants could be drug dealers or terrorists. Papers need to be verified, it would not be in America's best interests to allow criminals or terrorists into the country who could cause trouble in America.

If your illegal GTFO! If you are legal than STFU and stop worrying about it. Police have to have reasonable cause for requesting someone`s citizenship status. All you legal immigrants need to back your country instead of supporting our country becoming ruined by illegals taking jobs away from US citizens, abusing our food stamp system and health care system as well as those that are simply smuggling drugs or are criminals of some kind.

Xbox 360 wants to KinectPS3 wants to Move!  Why are both systems having such relationship problems?  The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

yea, seems like there is alot of misinformation out there. You have to be stopped for doing something illegal already, they can not jut stop you based on looks or at random. And I believe the big fuss comes over the fact that the feds feel states do not have the right to perform immigration p[olicy, and it should be left to the feds(boarder patrol) who are told by their superiers to basically not do their job, and not deport illegals. I personaly believe it is time for states to take some rights back, not only in immigration but elseware also. But that is for another discussion. I fully support this law, and I hope every city, and county in CA enacts their own version. I belive 5 or more have already.

Every state should do this then those illegals will have nowhere to run but out. Thats what we all want anyways. Go back to Cuba, go back to China, go back to Mexico(not singling out these places I know we get illegals from everywhere, these are just the big 3). IDC care where you go...just get out of our country if you not interested in being a citiszen of our country or getting a green card then you have no right to be here unless you have a passport of some kind.

I'll be honest- it doesn't bother me one bit. I've no problem with people who want to go through the legal avenue of becoming a citizen; welcome to the US! But too many of them come into this country, have a kid, and then leech off the system. There will be some shrinking pains, but for safety and unity, I think this is a good thing. And related, someone mentioned how speaking English was a requirement for citizenship. That's also good; it means that in a time of crisis, a message can be said once, and be understood by everyone. I'm even willing to cut people slack who are trying to learn the language. But if you've been here for, say, 4 years, and all the English you know is "No speak English" (and more often than not, it's Spanish they speak), then I've got another one for you: "Si usted no habla ingles, la salida esta detras de ti." Or, in more crude terms, "Get the fuck out!" The key thing to remember, is that this only applies to those who DON'T know English. If you know more languages, good for you.

But then again, I've always been a fan of kicking out people who don't belong here, who almost insist that those who have been here have to bend around to accomodate them. This also includes those who require us to pay for expensive services in other languages. And yes, I also apply these rules to myself- I won't go to Spain unless I feel I can at least try to carry on a conversation in Spanish. If you come here, you better at least try to do one in English. And the problem is that many of the illegal ones don't. What really pisses me off is how some areas (I'm looking at you, southern Florida) pander to those here illegally. But that's drifting toward a different topic...

US law requires none citizens to carry immigration papers with them at all time. Thus, if they don't have ID when pulled over then under the Federal Law they risk deportation and Visa revocation. Then consider that someone pulled over doesn't speak any English major red flag considering it is required for legal migration.  This law makes sense, sure there will be some ass hole cops who abuse the law but that is the case for every law.

Scotland requires 6 months worth of living expenses before you can get a VISA and immigrants are not eligible for welfare. Maybe the US should follow that model, illegal immigrants having legal children are allowed to stay and qualify for welfare in the US. So these immigrants now qualify for cash and food support combined with whatever income the father makes gee no wonder Arizona wants to discourage people from milking their system.

Here is a nice rule change illegal immigrants cannot give birth to legal citizens. If your child is born in the United States while you are here illegally then you must qualify for citizenship before your children can be granted citizenship. The rest of the world who wants to immigrate to the US must do so legally therefore people from Mexico and South America should as well.

Arizona's trying to pass a law for that, and if the current law is constitutionally shady, that next one is lunacy in their part. Like Arizona wants to waste money on a Supreme Court battle that's a guaranteed loss

Please point me to where citizens have to speak English.  Since the USA has no offical language, it is not required in any way at all for citizens to speak English.  They are highly encouraged to speak it, but in no way required.

I am amazed that we get angy with other countries for not securing their boarders, but we won't secure our own? It truly baffles me. but i believe this is the root of the problem.

We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an

American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin.

But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American. If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn't doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. . . We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding-house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people.

Roosevelt

roblem. People who come to the united states should be coming here to embrace our way of life and to become americans. I don't consider myself German American because my mother is a german immigrant, nor does she consider herself German. We consider ourselves American because we embrace this country. When they want to be americans I think americans will have less problems with them. If they still want to be mexican citizens and continue to embrace what mexico has become (corrupt and crime ridden) then perhaps they should just live in mexico and take their problems their. When they are ready to become americans there is a process in place already, follow it.

We dont apply the same theories in science from hundreds of years ago. I dont see how social/global views can stay set in stone.

1. Sure we do

2. Since when is Roosevelt hundreds of years old?

really? Antibiotics? HIV/Aids? Sterile Technique? Carcinogens? Vitamins? Cancers? Vaccines?

I wonder how roosevelt would feel had we developed a polio vaccine 40 years sooner.

Id say a man speaking on "american values" nearly a hundred years ago who never  was exposed to the 1960's or many other civil rights movements, kosovo, sudan, iraq, WW2 really doesnt have a grasp of where our country is at or the world for that matter in 2010.

The new changed law doesn't bother me much but the fact that when it first got signed into law, they had (correct me if I am wrong) printed in it where police could stop anyone who "looked illegal". That's why this Arizona law became a headline across the nation especially within the Hispanic community. The only people who could "look illegal" were minorities. Afterwards the Arizona law was changed so police could only ask someone who looked suspicious if they had done an offense. When that change occurred I became in favor for it, but then something from Arizona came out that changed my perspective. *Someone within Arizona was trying to pass a law that would not give "anchor babies" birth certificates.* I am not a Harvard student yet but I know it's against the U.S constitution. Given that and the fact that there is a Hitler imitator there (Joe Arpaio) makes me believe that Arizona is a racist state.

The other thing that irritates me is that legal residents like me would have to bring all documents where ever they go. If failed to do so I could become a criminal. Given that I didn't read an age restriction makes me liable for bringing my papers.

The other thing that worries me is profiling, something which has already happened even though it hasn't passed yet.

So you're basically saying because some things from 100 years ago are invalid, updated, or disproven then all things from 100 years ago must also be wrong?

Shit everybody, the Earth is torus!
