Actually, they're not since PS3 launch... and that's two weeks before Wii even launched...
- 360 = 36,112,859
- PS3 = 36,033,462
- HD = 72,146,321
- Wii = 72,706,242

Quite a feat beating two competitors at once. This won't last though, the Wii has been steadily losing market share for well over a year and the rate in which its happening is only accelerating with the Wii only 25k in front of the PS3 last week and no signs of any big changes soon. Let us also not forget that the PS2 will, by the end of its lifetime, probably have tripled the combined sales of its peer consoles which takes away a little part of the glory (yes, the market has grown and changed but that actually makes the PS2 accomplishment even more incredible). The DS is also a lot more impressing saleswise, I'm truly curious as to where that monster will end up in lifetime sales. 170 million? More? Crazy stuff.

Well, the thing is, Nintendo's victory is best seen in the financials - the Wii making billions while its competitors are swimming in red to keep up. The Wii will have made far more money than the PS2, or any home console, at the end of its life. It's not as pretty or straightforward to us as sales, but it's what Nintendo has been going for, so...

I'm pretty sure the Wii already exceeded the PS2 profits years ago.

likely.. and in any event the ps3 spent the ps2 profits plus some..

Actually, I think the PS3 has spent both the PS2 and PS' profits. I seem to recall reading those figures in here somewhere. There's no doubt that Nintendo is the big winner financially this generation, to state otherwise is beyond folly, what I'm getting at is that this gen is a whole lot closer in hardware sales than any other and the PS2 was unique in its domination on the market.
PS: I don't think the Wii exceeded the PS2 profits "years ago" since its only been out about four years (slightly less). No way it made more money in a year or two than the PS2 has over a decade.

More or less, yes. You can also add PSP in there.
As for Wii vs PS2 profitability, it's tough to tell as Nintendo's making huge returns off DS simultaneously, while Sony had decent profits off PS1 and PSP overlapping PS2's cycle (plus the PS3 moneypit killing it's latter years). In Wii's favor it was profitable from day one (while PS2 took a loss upfront), and there's no doubt Nintendo's been far, far more profitable on their own software (which brings higher margins than 3rd party licensing), but I just don't think Wii's been around long enough to overtake what PS2 likely made overall. Again though, there's no sure way to know.
