And yet Sony's gaming division has been posting loses the entire time.

Shows you just how much the PS3 is bleeding the company.

Sony probably cut the PS2's life short a year too soon. They probably ought to have released the PS3 in 2007!

Actually, if the strong push for HD DVD and the rushed release of the 360 hadn't forced their hand, I think the PS3 would have released later.  I don't think Sony had the initial production and costs where they really wanted it when they launched PS3, particularly in US and Japan.

The PS2 was selling fine and without the external factors they had no real need to launch when they did - and I doubt at the time they were really worried about the Wii, although of course with hindsight we know they should have been.

They probably figured all they had to do was show up to win. So why not take away the format war at the same time? :-p Though in any case I doubt that HD-DVD would have won even if the PS3 had been delayed. Sony's reputation with the PS2 and their own movie studios pretty much sealed that deal.

That's actually not true.  HD DVD was handily outselling Blu-ray until the launch of the PS3.

It's like i am banging my head against a wall!

The point is he said that PS2 had outsold 360 since 360 had released. That is not correct. That is the point.

You banging your head against the wall because you're failing to see the point, you've gone blind with this being a comparison thread of sales data. Like i said, that is not the point.. at all. You.. are.. missing.. the.. point. What you're trying to argue against.. is.. not.. the.. point.

I didn't say the PS2 outsold the 360 since it released! I show you numbers of PS2 sold since the begining of this generation, which happens to be at the time where the 360 was launched. And i showcase this based on three regions, the same regions we all know and love.. NA, JP, EU/Others.

And since the launch of this generation, the PS2 has sold millions upon millions of consoles.. and been doing so 5 years into this "next generation". Thats five years, five! That's half way through of what MS and SONY claim this generation is suppose to last, and yet, the PS2 is concidered last gen, even though its been selling on par with current gen consoles (minus the Wii) half way through this generation.

Obviously the PS2 will die out completly within 2 years time or whatever, and the "current gen" consoles will keep on truckin'. But imagine if the PS2 was made by another company, Apple for example. Their product would basicly have lasted throughout two "generations"(!), and don't you feel that their sales would matter despite not releasing a new upgraded console to compete with the Wii, PS3 and 360.. just because they're a "last gen" console? Or if Apple released a console tomorrow, would this gen die then and there? And no matter how much the Wii, PS3, 360 sold this holiday, it wouldn't matter, because we'd be in the next gen of home consoles and Apple would have a head start on all other companies when it comes to sales numbers?

THAT's the point of this thread.. the definition of generations. The fact that Playstation 2 and 3 is devided in sales despite both being the same company, both being supported (up until just recently anyways) and both have active sales in the same generation. But still, its Wii first, 360 second and PS3 third with most of the people on the iNteRneTZ. I mean, why is it that the 360 has a one year head start on the PS3 and Wii? Why dosen't the PS2 have a 5 year head start on the "current gen consoles"?  So like i said.. THAT's the point of this thread.

OMG what a wall of text.. i really need to continue working.

So, this is not a PS2 vs HD thread. Its a PS2 vs Next Gen definition-thread.

So... where's PS2 vs Wii then?

PS2 vs Wii isn't important because A) The thread is not comparing sales per se, just showing refrence numbers so that you people could see how well the PS2 have been doing half way through this "next gen". B) The Wii was released at the time of the PS3, and so having both the PS3 and Wii numbers wouldn't further showcase the point of the thread.

You could just swap PS3 with the Wii if you wanted, but i chose the PS3 because the PS3 (and 360) is suppose to be the true definition of "next gen" with all their HD awesomesauce.

umm. no Blu-Ray had 3 year's worth of sales even before the HD DVD finaly hit the market. Blu-Ray was already on the market being sold to the consumer since apr 10 2003.

I'm sorry, what?

The first Blu-ray movies were released on June 20th, 2006, about 3 months after the first HD-DVD releases.

Due to the ill advised use of the outdated MPEG-2 compression format, the same as DVD, the first batch of Blu-ray movies were widely considered to be of inferior quality to the early HD-DVD releases despite the greater bandwidth on the Blu-ray format.  The first 50gig dual layer Blu-ray wasn't released until Oct of that same year.

Due to the much higher price of the hardware and the lower quality of the movies HD-DVD was outselling Blu-ray by a factor of about 3-1 if I recall correctly.  The release of the PS3 was the catalyst that changed that with the PS3 being the cheapest available Blu-ray player for quite some time.

I lived through the format wars, I have a few hundred movies in both formats.  I remember it quite well.

LOL! If sony is smart they won't stop making the PS3 until 2017 to allow the PS3 to catch up to its competitors!  Plus the PS3 is powerful enough to actually compete with the NextBox graphically for at least a year or two!

who said any thing about Movies!

Blu-Ray as a format had a 3 year lead on HD DVD apr 10 2003 was the first Blu-Ray recorder on sale to the consumer 3 year's prior to even the first HD DVD player even hitting the Market.

You're talking about a Japan only device that cost almost $4000, and didn't even use a finalized BD spec.  Hell, it was released before the BDA even formed, Sony's lucky if they moved even 500 of those things.

HD-DVD players and movies hit market a few months before BD players and movies.  And yes, they were more successful upfront.

They deserve every sale.
