"people like Seece apparently do not care about themselves or their family"

What exactly has my family got to do with it? and I don't care about money over life, not that, that would be going through my mind at the time anyway.

If you are married with a house that has a white picket fence and a dog, and a freshly manicured lawn with 3 little children and a loving wife.... with a mortgage...

You get sued and lose all your savings plus your wages are garnished to pay for the injury you caused I can almost guarantee that your family will suffer for it ie:Can't pay mortgage on house,, lose your home, etc.  Most marriages fall apart due to money issues which would lead to other stuff, kinda like a domino effect...

Anyhow, that is probably the worst case scenerio.. And like I said, I am a very cynical person, hopefully it wouldn't happen, but I am a very cynical and pessimistic person :)

I'm not though, so don't make assumptions.

Someday you might be though.  If so would your opinion change?

Can someone here explain to me why I'm required to help someone if they need help? Let's just assume he wasn't on the clock and being paid.

Why is this man "required" to give aid to anyone if he isn't being rewarded for it?

Its called human decency and utilizing the medical training you have been taught. That is why medical officials take an oath to always help if possible. Given the info we know, it seems to be entirely possible that these two had limited EMT medical training and should have at least taken a look to see what they could do. The reward is seeing that person get up and live. Your statements really define a poor attitude towards life and humanity in general.

So then... you agree that all docotrs should be forced to work for free or even at cost to them to save someones life?

He isn't asking "Why should help."  He's asking "Why should there be a law that forces someone to help."

I don't see how this benefits me in any way, shape, or form? He lives another day? So what? What does that have to do with me? Look, if this man was on the clock and such and didn't do his job, I can understand why people were upset with him. He was being paid and didn't do his job! Plain and simple!

However, if he was off the clock and on his own, there is absolutely no reason he is /required/ to save peoples lives despite his abilities. I don't understand how anyone can say he "deserved" to die because of this.

I still don't understand your reward line, though. I mean, I guess I could use it as a pickup line and say "Hey girl, I saved that mans life. Fuck me!" but I don't think that's the kind of reward you're referring to.

It's not about how it's suppose to benefit you. It's about human dencency and doing the right thing. If one of your family member's are close freind's were in pain are hurting, would'nt you hope that someone would help and save them, regardless of what that person was doing at the time. I also blame the society in which we live in,there's so much violence and crime in the world, that nobody want's to do anything outside there comfort zone. That's just the cynical society in which we live in I guess.

So you if you were in serious pain, you would'nt want someone to give you aid, unless they were being rewarded for it.

I wouldn't call forcing someone to do something via law human decency.

I would HOPE someone would help someone who was injured... however to FORCE someone to help someone who is injured is a grave violation of human rights.

Read the comment by the FDNY spokesperson

And in case you don't want to go to link this is what he said......

"All of our members take an oath to assist others in need of emergency medical aid. They have a duty to act when called," said FDNY spokesman Steve Ritea.

So YES he HAD to help.
