Forums - Sales - UK Hardware revenue down 32%

Revenue from consoles in first half of 2010 has dropped by 32 per cent compared to last year, costing companies a cool £122 million.

Chart-Track and ELSPA released figures, showing revenue from portables dropping by 40 per cent while home consoles lost 29 per cent.

On the bright side, software sales are looking good, only dropping by 10 percent, and even then this is credited to the loss in revenue from PlayStation 2 sales which dropped by 83 percent.

Thanks to minor price adjustments, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 saw game revenues jump by 18 and 27 per cent respectively, while Wii sales dropped 21 per cent.

According to Chart Track, “the entertainment software market has so far proved challenging, especially in the hand-held arena and for Nintendo Wii. The first half of 2010 has been packed full of new releases, but customers are mindful of current economic conditions and are also spreading cash over a wider entertainment software product field than ever before (iPhone/iPad/Facebook/MMO’s/PSN/XBLA/WiiWare/Steam/Browser Gaming).”

Portables seem to suffer the most in software sales with DS and PSP down 36 and 32 per cent respectively.

“The hand-held market is in need of re-invigoration. DS (all variants) has an installed base of over 11m, which means that the target market is saturated.” state Chart Track.

Interesting, the overall picture seems to be very similar to the US.
