The point, Slimebeast, is that hectic shooters aren't some new phenomenon. It's the slow-paced, "thinking man shooters" who are the new kids on the block, fancy graphics or no.

Yes yes, you're right, but I hope I have clarified now that there's different ways to achieve hectic.

Did you play Resident Evil 4? Or the first Dino Crisis (I think)?

Disolitude put my thoughts into words.

Yes, maybe Doom II hurts my argument a bit but in a way Doom II still doesn't count because it was made like a shootem up basically, just in first person. And as we all know shootemups are allowed to be hectic because it's a core gameplay idea in them, many shootemups were hectic. Gameplay that requires fast reflexes and full concentration to handle an endless wave of baddies.

But then from 1995 and on shooters started to develop into games that also suited the thinking man, with games such as Heretic, Hexen and Half-Life being the pioneers.

I still don't mind shooters to be hectic per se. If they throw waves of enemies at you as long as it feels logical for the setting then I'm fine with it.

So what I am critical of with modern shooters is the eruption of visual effects just to wow you - the Jerry Bruckheimer effect.

EDIT: I might be contradicting myself when Im not counting Doom II but in the next sentence allowing "waves of waves of enemies at you as long as it feels logical for the setting"... hmm, yes I am.  But I kinda want to point my finger on two phenomenons at the same time now that u brought Doom II up:

1. That I hate the Jerry Bruckheimer effect
2. That I prefer slow paced shooters no matter what lol.

I think that some of these frantic shooters have the gameplay and user interaction to back up the crazy visuals...and some don't. I like the ones that do...

However there is nothing worse than playing a visually hectinc game and feeling like its a scripted set piece after set piece that bombards you with visuals but has you barely having any control. Hence why I never finished MW2

Every time I watch gameplay from this game, I feel like I should be excited, but I'm just not. It's probably something I'll need to play to get a feel for, but I think Slimebeast is right when he says the game has a gimmicky feel. Not that I have the same taste in shooters (CoD4:MW and Killzone 2 are some of my favorite shooters this generation), but something about Vanquish just makes it feel 'meh'.

Yeah I've played Resi 4, not completed it though.

That's another way to achieve hectic, yes.

It's made by the same guy. That's part of the reason people are excited: it has an excellent pedigree.

Yeah, nearly all of these modern frantic shooters are also heavily scripted. I can't stand scripted. Can u name some examples that are less scripted?

That Itakagi guy made Resi 4? But Vanquish is not from Capcom is it? What other games he do?

Itagaki is the guy who makes Ninja Gaiden. This is Shinji Mikami.
