Forums - Gaming - Yoichi Wada: “Some Are Not Very Happy With Final Fantasy XIII”

I don't think that Square-Enix can be happy with the FF13 sales.Don't they expected around 12 Mio sales worldwide. Are the current sales even enough to meet the production costs?

As a sidenode: Final Fantasy-Fans will be very happy with The Last Story :)

no square expcted 6 Million (shipped) in sales for ffxiii (they sed this before games release last year)

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6230719.html

sumthng they will do easily.

and the last story luks horrible, bland and boring. the art style sucks, the combat isnt true jrpg style. xenoblade is th one tht will be gud.

I didn't buy it day one because I was very skeptical. Instead, I bought Heavy Rain and God of War III.

A couple of days I ago I got a good deal for it and i got it with low expectations, just as a token of appreciation for early wonderful Final Fantasy experiences, and boy, I'm so glad it all happen like this. I'm strongly impressed and having the best time with it and I hadn't even reached the famous 11th level.

I love the story, I love the characters and I love the battle system which is pretty different from traditional jrpgs. Its visuals and music make it an outstanding and beautiful experience. I couldn't be happier.

I am still waiting to make my final veredict though I believe that media and some users failed to appreciate this game. Too concerned on either it delivered the same experience through the traditional tools or not, they were unfair to judge the game regardless of what they had preconceived a Final Fantasy should be. No towns? No "freedom"? Too linear? Well then, the problem is you were expecting Oblivion or a Shin Megami Tensei game. This is no sandbox, thank god it's not. Is different and fresh. Take it for what it is and enjoy. That's what I'm doing and I couldn't be happier with Light, Snow and company.

Final Fantasy XIII one of the greatest games of this gen!? Oh wait, sorry my sarcasm detector was broken. You were obviously kidding.

hah good one you and all the other whiners just dont know a good game when you see one

dude you are an ignorant and have no idea what FF was about. Go back to play you marathon simulator.

yea right final fantasy is my favourite franchise by alot shot it just really isnt a bad game people are just jumping on the hate bandwagon

No people just don't like the game. FFXIII essentially strips away what made Final Fantasy great in the first place.

THIS , is so easy to see all that was missing in FF13 that is obvious that if oyu liked it you werent speckting a FF game. FF13 Was an insult to the JRPG genrer. I sold most becuase of the hype and the fact that it was multiplat, if would have been a good game it would have reached GT like sells.

Holy crap, it has been 3 almost 4 months and you are STILL at it? God I wouldn't want to be you. You must have an ultra dull life.

This game was definitely meant for the newbs. If Sakaguchi was still lead director of final fantasy the crap you see coming out would've never happened. He would've been able to put his genius mind together with the best SE has today. I wish in a perfect world that Sakaguchi could've had a final fantasy title be his last game, but the world isn't perfect. This final fantasy had beautiful animations and movies, but the game was all auto trigger and an insult to gamers everywhere. This was by far the most sickeningly easy Jrpg i've ever played. I heard Nomura say that one of the characters might make their way into the Versus title. For the sake of quality and relatable characters, I hope this never happens.

Not really, this game is not a newb friendly game IMO. It's easy for you because you been gaming a lot. I let my cousin played this and He's having difficulty on the game. It took him alot of retries on the boss on the first boss when the paradigms was explained.

lol, must be "in" to hate FFXIII nowadays. Game was awesome IMO

That's exactly what I think. It seems as if you were no true jrpg fan if you do love it (as if you were a newbie who doesn't get it), while, on the other side of the spectrum, a still really good game but that falled short if you consider all what could have been as Valkyria Chronicles, is being overrated all the time. Don't get me wrong, one of the two games I bought the PS3 in the first time was because of Valkyria, and though is a great game worthy of praise, it's easy to see that it could have been much more than what it is.

What I'm saying following your lead is that today is "in" to hate FF XIII and to over rate other games as VC, regardless of what they really are (once again, not arguing the fact that VC is a great game that brings good thing to the table, I'm just saying its over rated). The main problem seems to be that they choose to call it Final Fantasy XIII a Final Fantasy game.

I have some suggestions for the Final Fantasy franchise:

1. Get rid of the antiquated, decades old "Attack, Magic, Item" turn-based combat system.

2. Implement a real time combat system where computer algorithms based off of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons dice rolling becomes standard fare for combat calculations in real game time as it is in most WRPGs.

3. Stop with this intent on making every Final Fantasy game an interactive 100 plus hour long movie because some hotshot Japanese game developer is envious and aspires to the ranks of Hideo Kojima and Shigeru Miyamoto.

4. Open up the game world from the very start after the tutorial.

5. Allow the player to progress the main quest line at his/her own time of choosing.

As for the chart the OP displayed, it confirms my suspicions that Japanese gamers love their Japanese games at the expense of equally good if not better titles such as Batman: Arkham Asylum.

If gamers love good games, then can someone tell me why Batman: Arkham Asylum sold only 30,000 copies in Japan, while both Dragon Quests sold close to 6 million? Would it have been different if Konami or another Japanese game developer created Batman: Arkham Asylum?

so you want them to make dragon age? and strip away even more of what made FF popular in the first place? Sorry but just because you don't like that style of game doesn't mean that making it into something else would make it better. And what was the last turnbased FF game anyway I don't remember ever playing one I but 4 is the earliest one I have played and I haven't played many so maybe there are a lot of turnbased one I don't know about.

As for low sales of Western developed games it is a cultural thing mainly the themes, characters etc are foren to them and there is the fact that most Japanese gamers probably have never tried many western games so they don't know what they are missing. Combine those things with the fact that western games often aren't advertised a lot in Japan and you get low sales.

You mean fancy videos like FF VII started?  FF wasn't very popular before that in the west.

sure that and eastern game design his list of ways to make FF better was just turn it into a western RPG and shorten the games I personally don't think that would make FF better, and I am more a fan of WRPGs. JRPGs are what they are making them into WRPGs would just make them western games with anime inspired characters. from what I have heard he basically wants a more westernised FF XII and XI/XIV IMO that is not the way foreword for JRPGs that is the way WRPGs are headed and western devs have more experience with that style of game and tho the results would be interesting I feel that doing so would destroy everything unique about JRPGs and turn them into inferior WRPGs. I feel that JRPGs need to find their own way foreword, and sorry for repeating myself but that isn't copying WRPGs that sold worse (not saying dragon age is not a great game) what that way foreword is IDK but I don't think copying a style of game that developed from a style of game you copied developed into your own style is the way foreword for the JRPG style.

well that ended up longer than expected I guess I should proof read but it's 3AM so F it.

Edit: small tweak to the last part

Even if I don't like FF , 'westernize' FF will be one of the worst move ever in the story of video game.

Real time combat could be a good idea but with the dice system it would be frustating. If an enemy dodge my attack , I want to see the character sprite dodge my sword. Not a 'I touch you but you magicaly dodge'.I'm a huge D&D player but sometime when i'm unlucky several time in a row I really want to kill someone.

Good music & movie give some life to a game. Something that WRPG don't have.  Even if Fallout 3 is my favorite PS3 Game the game is so humdrum.

In almost all jrpg you gain a flying ship to explore the world so I don't know why gamer are crying for a open world. (But having it in the beginning could be a good idea.)

Sequel I want the most :

Patapon 3 , Elite beat Agent 2 , ROTK 12 , Mother 4, Legend of legaia      3, Resident Evil outbreak 3.

Favorite Youtube poop        McDonnald                 Morshu

I agree FF13 was a good game, with some rare moments of awesome, but for me it didnt reach its full potential as an FF, and was dissappointing for long time fans. by the way i've been thinking about getting valkyria chronicles, is it worth it?? its just the battles seem a bit too slow for my liking, but i've heard nothing but great things so i might try it out!!

by the way a lot of games are overratted this days, and by the standards a new FPS is judged every month, then FF13 is a triple A game, no doubt, its just fans of the series expected more than that. i did expect a lot more.

That's the fans fault then. Why put it up on a pedestal so high that no matter what SE does it will just be a disappointment.
