So I can't expect a 'Last Story II' with a better story and characters, but a completely cocked up levelling system?

I'm expecting Last Story XIII Online X-2 Tactics Mystic Quest Crystal Bearers Agito Versus shortly.

Lol, personally i think he'll take a break from gaming for a while and then he'll do something else. maybe it will be a success, but the wii market dosent seem ideal for this type of game. hopefully, he does this and then announces a supprise return to square. the FF series hasnt been as good without him unfortunatly.

It's worth pointing out that the FF whoring didn't really kick into overdrive until Wada took over and Sakaguchi was removed from power.  The only real FF spinoffs under the Gooch were FF Gaiden (ie: Mana 1), FF USA (ie: Mystic Quest), FF Tactics and if you count them, some Chocobo games (Racing, Dungeon 1-2, Dice, etc).  On of the many reasons I miss him steering the company. :(

if it is his last project hopefully he means it unlike Kojima who's jelly-spined about that sort of stuff

I think he's just preparing for the worst case scenario, I honestly don't believe Mistwalker has enough funds for another game.

We all know that Square would take Sakaguchi back in a heartbeat if he wanted back in.

Remember it is Nintendo published. So they do have resources for it.

This is a Nintendo's game co-developed by Mistwalker and published by Nintendo. The executive producer is Satoru Iwata. And the "Mr. M" that worked with Mr. Sakaguchi is Shigeru Miyamoto.

So, no worries...

No, it wasn't.  "Mr. M" is the game's director, that couldn't be Miyamoto.

What's the problem if he is the director or the co-director? This is a colaboration between Mistwalker and Nintendo and The Last Story is a Nintendo's Trademark. After all this is a Nintendo's game. I believe that Mr. M is Miyamoto.
