Right ...
Let's just ignore that the regimes that murdered the most people were based on a centralized government with heavy government involvement in the economy that have a greater resemblance to Socialism than free market laissez faire capitalism

I think you are mistaking communism for socialism here. There are some pretty big and important differences there.
OT:
Socialism in its pure form does not work. Communism fell apart in the 80s for a reason. However pure unrestricted capitalism is the exact same thing. If Reagan hadn't come around and started spending like a woman with an unlimited creidt card, the US' stagflation would have ruined the country just like what happeneed to Russia. Ever notice how since the 80s, the entire "capitalist" lifestyle has basically caused the US to gain 13 trillion dollars in debt? Imagine if you gave 13 trillion to ANY other country and they would be living pretty fucking well as well It is 99% of its GDP and about 43 thousands dolalrs per person, old, baby, man, woman. Considering that the standard family of four makes about 48 thousand a year, it would take them 4 whole years on living on 5k a year for the debt to be paid off.
For comparison, Russia has 369 billion in debt which is only 30% of their GDP.
Basically, Capitalism already failed miserably and it lasted as long as COmmunism, it's just that the Russians were too proud and didn't rack up debt to hide their failure, can't say the same about the US though.
