Members of the French parliament voted 335-1 in favour of the burka ban. Also out of those 336 members, 4 are Muslims. So, it would appear, that some Muslims are oppose to the Burka.

When in Rome....do as the Romans do. It is up to the minority of Muslims to adjust to France rather than France adjust to a minority of Muslims.

Dude.. there are 577 members... 241 members refused vote...

Lets imagine that ALL those 241 happened vote against. That would still result in defeat. News just coming in...

"The main body representing French Muslims says face-covering veils are not required by Islam and not suitable in France."

To read more click the link. Before you say anything this paper isn't silamophobic or anything....none of the major UK papers are.

You missed something from the quote "but it has expressed concern that the law will stigmatise Muslims in general"

isn't a bit paradoxal by upholding the European values of liberalism and tolerance by restricting the right of women to choose to dress as they wish, in accordance with their beliefs? with this law they create a bigger problem then there is..

@Nikkom

Are you muslim?

Personally I think this is good for public safety. Being able to fully identify someone at all times can only be a good thing and is in the greatest interest of the French people. If I concealed my identity in Britian in a way (other than the Burka) where my face couldn't be seen i would be told to remove whatever I was wearing. Just because some people "choose" to wear the veil is no good reason to avoid public law. From my interpretations of the holy Quran it never says this garment has to be worn. I wish the British politicians would vote for a ban on this garment. A long with it they should ban the balacalava...

Your thoughts?

I think a state dress code is moronic whether it's burkas or balaclavas. I think any security gains are marginal compared to the loss of freedom. I should be able to wear a mask or a hood without having to worry about criminal charges.

I also think that enforced secularism is just as disgusting as enforced religion. These are not matters that the state should be concerning itself with.

If i walked into a bank with a balacala and was wearing totally black clothes, what would you say and what would be the point in even haviong security cameras guarding the area?

I didn't know if I should agree or disagree, but footballfan reminded me of a quotation :

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do", so in the end, I agree.

Are they only banning burkas in banks, or are you making the argument that all citizens' faces should be clearly visible at all times?

Well, if they also apply the ban to all masks, hoods, helmets, and wide-brimmed hats, then it will just be police state bullshit instead of ethnically discriminatory, police state bullshit. I guess that's better.

Maybe what would be best is if some state regulatory body got together and made an approved list of acceptably French clothing. That would help prevent people from dressing in ways which threaten French culture and safety.

Just curious... are there any records of violent crimes being committed by people wearing burkas? Is this a big issue, or are we trying to get ahead of the game here?
