Forums - Sony - Attention - Change the thermal paste on your 60gb ps3 or it will explode

Oh hi there

I'm so glad you decided to click into my thread. You're probably thinking -- wait a second -- I didn't change my thermal paste yet my ps3 hasn't exploded yet! So there.

Here's the problem. For some reason Sony cheaped out or otherwise failed with the thermal paste they use in 60gb ps3s. Over engineering and building a console to a ridiculous spec was not enough for Sony. That would be too easy. They instead spent $800 putting quality components only to pair it with crappy paste that dries out over time. From what I've read, it may be the paste itself or it may be insufficient clamping force on the RSX and Cell. Either way, if your PS3 is sufficiently old I guarantee it is running hotter than it needs to because of dried/crappy thermal paste. Combined with dust buildup, this is a serious issue that you need to address if you want your 60gb ps3 to continue working.

I'm making this thread because I experienced ylod myself on my first ps3 and have read about the need to do this. I opened up my ps3 earlier tonight to find what I suspected -- dried thermal paste causing my ps3 fan to run more than necessary ; this obviously poses long term reliability issues as well. Immediately after applying new paste, my ps3 runs much quieter than before and likely cooler as well. Anyways, stop slacking, buy some thermal paste and electronic screwdrivers together and do it. Disassembly and assembly has been covered by numerous people on youtube and linked to by me later in this thread.

I had a launch 60 gig system so I was really worried about mine not lasting much longer, so I just went a head and traded mine in at Gamestop. They have a deal till the 18th, 200 bucks for your ps3. So I got a Slim. The slim is so sexy and its very quiet I love it.

How wet is the paste supposed to be ?

They explode?!

That explains the giant hole and charred reamins I found in my TV room the other day.  =/

All the more reason to buy a slim!

I was planning to do this just recently, though I'm not sure how much should be applied to it, could it causes problem if I put too much?

The (silver)paste should not overflow and poor down on the board to make all kinds of nasti shortcircuits and stuff.

A very thin layer, spread it evenly, leave no air bubles and what not. Certainly no paper and other stoopid things one could find now ant then on a CPU.

if you had the ylod and didnt reball it youll get it again i doesnt matter if you re applied the TP also i think the new models 40gb and up used a silver based TP unlike the 20 60 and 80gb old fats

I was thinking that had Saddam had awesome PS3 all-in-one-guidance-and-explosive tech instead of having to fit PS2's on his crappy 3rd choice rockets, he would have won Gulf War II!
