Here's the thing. For some reason Sony cheaped out on the thermal paste they use in 60gb ps3s. Over engineering and building a console to a ridiculous spec was not enough for Sony. That would be too easy. They instead spent $800 putting quality components only to be paired with crappy paste that dries out over time. From what I've read, it may be the paste itself or it may be insufficient clamping force on the RSX and Cell. Either way, if your PS3 is sufficiently old I guarantee it is running hotter than it needs to because of dried/crappy thermal paste. Combined with dust buildup, this is a serious issue that you need to address if you want your 60gb ps3 to continue working. I'm making this thread because I experienced ylod myself and have read about the need to do this. I opened up my ps3 earlier tonight to find what I suspected -- dried thermal paste causing my ps3 fan to run more than necessary, which poses long term reliability issues. Immediately after applying new paste, my ps3 runs much quieter than before and likely cooler as well. Anyways, stop slacking, buy some thermal paste and electronic screwdrivers together and get to it. Disassembly/assembly has been covered by numerous people on youtube. |
How wet is the paste supposed to be ?
