I can make a recommendation, but it stands as unique in the genre, unflinching and unwavering in its convictions and the xperience it seeks to deliver. It is not a traditional SRPG. I only call it an SRPG because if I were being more specific, it would be one of only two games in its own genre.

Ever heard of Ogre Battle?

I have heard of ogre battle havent played it. I hear about this game so much, but was relcutant to get it because I heard that the story was very well told because Matsuno wrote, but the actual game sucked so it was always instilled in my mind you only played Ogre battle for the story...so would you mind shedding light on that?

Whoever told you that is a liar. The games are initially hard to play and the SNES game is difficult the whole way through and the story isn't traditionally told in that one, but the N64 game is phenomenal and I recommend it without hesitation every time this comes up.

It breaks the "taboos" you mention above in several ways, but it's not a grid-based SRPG in the first place. It's about leading an army, not just a squad.

Try the N64 game, Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber. It's great.

Great Ill look into that! so ignore the SNES one or what?

There's also an excellent GBA game in the Ogre series -- Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis.

Final Fantasy Tactics?

Edit: Sorry XD I skimmed your post and missed your issues with this game.

Look into it only after the N64 game. You'll miss out on a lot of story because of this, but the SNES game is almost impenetrable to newcomers.

Valkyria Chronicles anyone?

Shining force 2 is the king. You gotta play that if you haven't yet.

Don't ignore the SNES one, but the N64 one might be a bit easier to get into.

Jagged Alliance 2 (PC)

Langrisser 1-5

Fallout 1 & 2 (PC)

Shining Force 1,2 and 3

Valkyria Chronices (PS3)

Jeanne d'Arc (PSP)

Here's a Jeanne D'Arc gameplay vid for you

Tactics Ogre.  The real one (PS1, Saturn import or SFC import/ROM) not that nerfed GBA spinoff.  I'd go for the SFC ROM (best soundtrack imo, zero loading, easy to find, full translation patch out there).  If you feel guilty, just buy the cart and play the ROM anyway.

Advance Wars. Though that really isn't an RPG and it doesn't fulfill your need of being a console game.
