Forums - Nintendo - Do you keep "Wii Connect 24" on?

Long ago, I used to come home from work and my game room would be bathed in a beautiful blue light.  It was aliens.  That was ten years ago.

More recently, Nintendo released a console that you may have heard of called the "Nintendo Wii".  One of the cooler features was that it was always online.  ALWAYS.  It would be gathering weather data, news information, messages, etc.  Someone would send a message and once again, the room would be filled with a blue light.  It was pretty cool.

Well, it's been a while since I recieved a new Mario Kart Wii message.  It's been a while since I got a message from the Check Mii Out channel.  It's been a while since Wii Connect 24 did, well, anything significant for me.  This morning, I made a decision.  I went into the Wii Options menu and I pulled the plug.  In my household, Wii Connect 24 is no more.

I'll remember the good times like gifting games to various VGChartz members, sending obscene pics to Elgefe02, or recieving the random useless update from Nintendo but it just seems like the right time to say good-bye to that feature.

So, do you guys still use Wii Connect 24?

no, not right now. i did turn it on for a while a long time ago, but not any more

i know it's *OK* to leave your Wii on 24 hours a day, it's just that i don't feel comfortable doing it. i don't gain anything from it personally, so i just leave it off

I kept it on for a few weeks after I bought it.  I haven't had it on in two years.

i have never had it on while im not on the system. i heard once that that the wii would overheat if i did that. im not sure if its true but coupled with that and the fact that it never seemed that usefull at all, i never kept it on...

Yes.

My Wii runs hot if the power button is on the yellow light(which signifies an online connection) so I just hold it until it turns red. I never really did use it anyway.

No. In fact, i'd have internet connection problems with the wii if I left it on. I have connect 24 on, but the standby connection off.

I've had it on since I got it with no side effects.  I just don't see the point of using the (probably miniscule) bandwith, anymore.  It would probably help things if Nintendo was still doing something significant with it but it seems to have fallen off of the map.  Luigi doesn't even send me messages in Mario Galaxy, anymore!

It had so much potential, too.  Weather conditions could have affected my Mii Plaza in real time.  People could turn on their Wii's to find comics/promotions in their inbox (the Wii Message Board).  Every day could have been Christmas!  Now, it's more of an afterthought.

Sorta strange seeing that red light that's been yellow for years, though.........

WiiConnect24 caused my Wii GPU to fry.

No idea if they changed it but when the Wii was first released if you left the Wii in standby the fan wouldn't be running but the Wii would be heating up due to the WiiConnect24 using the WiFi. This caused my GPU to fry.

I haven't used it since so I have no idea if the fan runs now while the Wii is in standby with WiiConnect24 on.
