I like both. Prefer TB.
I also think that well executed ARPG are harder to find.

Qual é, Dadinho...?
Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!
I defy anyone to claim that Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon on Merciless doesn't require skill to win without losing a unit.

Did you know that there is a Low level challenge you can do in... Final Fantasy VIII? you can finish the game (almost) without leveling up. Did you know that you can finish Final Fantasy IX without leveling up? you can even beat ozma on level 1 :S Did you know that you can finish Final Fantasy XII doing a low level challenge? like the 122333 low level challenge? And I'm not sure, but I think you can also finish Final Fantasy XIII without leveling up anything in your Crystarium :S And I think you can also do a Low level challenge in Final Fantasy VI too... Don't know about the rest. If you need to level up in those games to beat a boss, it's because the player lacks the skills to beat him and needs his characters to make up for his lack of skills to beat the bosses in the game :P The point is, you can do the same in both Turn based JRPGs and Action JRPGs. =P |
uhm That is not true, you will be crush by a high level enemies. There are enemies there that will have a 1 hit KO if your HP si very low so you will need a lot of HP. There is also a certain boss fight in FFXIII that will put on massive damage every 2-3 seconds and also in the final boss you need curaja or you are doom. I don't want to spoil that on the final battle so I will leave it as that. Just speaking on my experience.

I'm not a very huge fun of action RPGs or real time JPRGs (even though I love Tales battle system). Even if you're right though, not every JRPG can and should become a real time one. Games like Dragon Quest, Pokemon and Final Fantasy should remain turn based... Just like Tales games must refrain from becoming too cinematic, like FF.

I am a fan of both, but to be honest I grew up on turn based and think I prefer it in most my RPG's. Games like Kingdom Hearts and the Tales series I have played I have liked a lot though.

While it does require some skill. ( if you played a FE game before it feels right at normal for you) Arena abuse power leveling takes all that "skill" away

Jesus chirst, why the hell are you using abject shit like Kingdom Hearts?!
Go play some Monster Hunter, Ys or Demon's Souls and get back to us...
I just have to say that Square-Enix did a good job in speeding up turn-based battles with Dragon Quest IX. That is my only issue, due to recent time-constraints, that I have with turn-based games anymore. Most of the time it is because an animation, that you must go through, takes a minute. They are two different gameplay styles, and one shouldn't be judged because it isn't another, as I've seen some reviewers do. I personally prefer turn-based systems when compared with the average real-time rpg, but if that real-time game plays realistically(definitely not Tales, Kingdom Hearts, or Star Ocean here, more akin to Monster Hunter with the basis being more Role-Playing than Action of course; most Western Role-Playing games do this right) then that would be the rare occasion that I'd probably prefer a real-time system. I also of course love when elements from both are combined.
The DQ games were always pretty speedy though, bar DQVIII. Actually, DQIX feels a little slow after the lightning quick DQIV/V remakes.
