Forums - Nintendo - 3DS Could Feature 3G Connectivity

If cryptic interview is to be believed

Just don't call it a 3GDS, Nintendo

We know that Nintendo is keen to do more with the connectivity features of its upcoming 3DS, with the ability to download new content automatically via WiFi. Now a rumour has surfaced that the machine could also feature 3G technology to offer an always-on Internet connection.

Ryuji Yamada, President at Japanese wireless company NTT DoCoMo, revealed in a recent interview that his company was in discussion with handheld console manufacturers about the possibility of including 3G features in their upcoming machines. He declined to name particular companies and neither Nintendo nor handheld rival Sony has given any comment, so think of this as the latest in a long line of tantalising 3DS rumours for now.

Good news...

I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

Whoever says this is a bad idea. Is a complete idiot.

I'd rather them allow a connection to be made through bluetooth from a phone or a laptop that has a 3g connection. I don't see this catching on, although that may be a different case for Japan

If it did have 3G, that would use more battery. I like my battery to last as long as possible. And besides, Nintendo could use the much needed space for something more useful. I need a place to store my candy. There isn't much space left in my car.

*shrug* I probably wouldn't use it, but it'd be cool for those who would.

G-spot connectivity? Now that'd be both horny and cool!

Iwata did express interest in it back in the day.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

To me the problem with that is which version of 3G? In NA they would have to choose between two very large company's. The more worldly version used by AT&T/iPhone or Verizon's. More than likely they would pick the GSM version which would suck for the majority of cell phone users in the US as well as the rest of the world. Then how does that work for those of us like me with Verizon? Is is wholly separate from your cell company? Is it a deal through Nintendo directly?

Meh, I think it should just contain Wireless N and that's good enough. 3G would just add a potentially additional monthly use fee and I know I wouldn't want it.

MS paved that way, now neither Sony nor Nintendo will miss it.
