Forums - Microsoft - Attention Lazy People: Kinect Can Be Couch-Friendly If The Developers Wish It So

In the days following the launch of the Wii, gamers around the world experienced something new and frightening: exercise. This threat wore off quickly as lazier methods of play were quickly discovered. At this year's E3, though, Microsoft brought fear into the hearts of the sedentary by showing off Kinect. All of the games being shown at E3 required players to stand in front of the screen and move around. Not again!

During the show, Microsoft was unable to confirm whether Kinect would be compatible for those who wanted to sit while playing. Thankfully, Joystiq has since managed to get a more concrete response out of the company:

"Kinect can be used while sitting when an experience is developed with sitting in mind," said a Microsoft rep. Phew!

All joking aside, the whole standing/sitting thing is a serious issue when it comes to the success of Kinect. To require someone to stand for even simple tasks like navigating the Kinect dashboard or fast-fowarding a video definitely defeats the purpose.

It'll be interesting to see just how many games adopt the standing-required mentality, something that the Wii was never able to do since it didn't track your precise body location.

That quote is hilariously funny. Answering the question while not answering the question. If a dev uses the voice recognition capabilities of Kinect to add something to their game while you play the rest of the game with the 360 controller, they can say that you are using Kinect while sitting down.

I'll believe it when I see people playing Joy Ride sitting down, like shown in the first trailer at last year's E3.

This.  Why not a simple yes or no?  Makes you think.

I think they are still in process of developing this feature and hope to implement it before launch.

Joy Ride wasnt shown last year as a Kinect game.  They did have a demo of Burnout that did allow people to sit down and play last year at E3.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Last year's Kinect had the processor, though.  Without it, it seems they may have lost some tracking power.  This year's racing demo (Forza) required you to stand, as well as sporting gameplay that was controlled by the game itself.

I have a friend working for a big publisher (can't tell which one), and he told me that you can use Kinect while seated, but it will only track your hands not your lower body so no speed up or brake with your feet and without a way to accelerate or brake the game has to control the speed for you, also you have to start standing so it recognizes your body, then you can sit down.

Is that true? Every demo of Burnout I've seen last year always had people standing. They had to step their right foot forward to go and backward to stop.
