Forums - Nintendo - VGChartz review: Sin & Punishment: Star Successor

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/review/27354/sin-and-punishment-star-successor/

In late 2007, I downloaded a little gem of a game from the Wii Virtual Console that never made it over to this side of the ocean titled Sin & Punishment and immediately fell in love. The fast paced action and stellar (we’re talking N64 here) production values had me hooked. Granted, the story made no sense and some moments were just downright cheesy but I didn’t care--the game was great fun and that was all the mattered. Well it seems I wasn’t the only one impressed by Sin & Punishment, as Nintendo and Treasure Games are teaming up again to bring us Sin & Punishment: Star Successor for the Wii. Does this sequel do the cult classic justice or should the original have stayed an only child?

(hope you all enjoy) : )

Left a comment on the review page. Not sure I agree with the final score at all.

Plus: "[...] a reliance on high scores are elements which, while part of the Sin & Punishment experience, hold the game back from becoming something more accessible to the modern gaming community that demands more and more from its games."

Hmmm... I better watch what I'm gonna be doing when I'm gonna make games in a few years from now. That's what gaming is now eh?

Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

I didn't know you could toggle the Japanese voices, although they sound so wooden that I actually consider them worse.  Somehow.

I'll confess to being confused; the review sounds mostly positive, but the score is pretty low for the standard modern review scale.  Is the only problem that you're not into score-attack titles?

The original game was originally in English voices, wasn't it? That's why the VC version is English voiced but with Japanese subtitles. It would make sense to prefer the English voices here, since they were the original franchise voices.

There were elements of this game that i loved and loathed. Some moments shined, and others made me smash my desk in frustration, and sometimes those moments were back to back. Like in the first fight with Commander Deko. The first stage of that fight i hated, that was beyond bullet hell and a level of madness nobody should be expected to tolerate, but it was sheer brilliance after that when it devolved into that impromptu chain fight, and then where you had to pitch the mines at him.

The back to back fights against the keepers preceding that where the game didn't tell you what to do at all didn't help either. I enjoyed the main boss of water world, i loathed Hibaru, i loved the entire run in the desert, and hated most of Mt. Fuji.

All in all i enjoy the game, but it's a matter of hit-and-miss design elements, between the clever and the impossible.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

wtf 7.6? I thought you said you loved it. This should be a 9.

Nah, I think S&P is great and I love a game which is entirely about replaying to get a higher score.  The game's only been out for a week or so and I've already logged 12 hours into it, 3 to 4 hour game?  Please, this is not Final Fantasy, you don't play it for the story or the voice acting, you play it for the frantic fast paced action; and you don't play it once, you play again and again for that fun experience.  The review of this game is similar to somebody reviewing Gran Turismo 5 on it's story structure and character development.

My main gripe with the game is that there is no online co-op and that co-op does not allow you to use both characters which would seem ideal, but I guess not in the eyes of the devs.  Those two things don't stop me from loving every second of it (nor does it seem to bother some of my friends who would rather not attempt to dodge the 10 billion bullets on screen during co-op)

That's fair (although I personally don't hold the same opinion), but none of these gripes appear in the review.  The only downsides brought up were 1) occasionally-off art, a "meh" co-op system, and that's about it.  The gameplay is called "archaic," but I didn't see anything in the review to support that statement, and while the corny dialogue/bad plot are raised, they're also stated as being irrelevant (almost a plus, actually).

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad there are still developers out there making games like that. I enjoyed every seconds of the game (I still am), and I dominate (with my bro as well) most of the leaderboards at the moment!

Your comment about the co-op is an interesting one and I've thought about it before, but I think they didn't include the other character on screen for many reasons:
- the game would not run at a constant 60 fps;
- there would be collisions with the other character like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii (if they put collision detection that is); or
- the amount of enemies on screen plus the two characters plus both crosshairs and shot colors would be too much at the same time!

I was glad to notice that the second player's shots didn't obstruct my view during gameplay. Nice decision on their part IMO. Or maybe all you meant was that it sucks that you can't use the other char's charge shot at least?

@ noname: Honestly, the story is awesome as it is. *Spoilers*

You fight a gigantic tiger and bird, and then they FUSE together?! Or you fall in lava and TURN INTO a monster?! How badass is that?

The full crosshair remains though, in spite of the lack of a charge shot for P2.  I find that a bit of a mistake.

At least it's a very light yellow color. Adding a charge shot for P2 would make the game extremely more easy than it is (for me and my bro that is...).
