Sucker Punch – ‘We Made Dumb Decisions’ with inFamous

Speaking exclusively to Play at its Seattle studio base, Sucker Punch has admitted that it made mistakes in how it made inFamous, but has learnt from them and made significant improvements for inFamous 2. Development director Chris Zimmerman revealed that the studio is now very familiar with the PS3 hardware and is fully prepared to exploit it to make inFamous 2 look the best it can.

“We made some really dumb decisions in the last game, but we’ve managed to fix them,” he told us. “It was pretty early on that we knew what we weren’t doing in inFamous that we needed to do in inFamous 2, but we had to tear a whole bunch of stuff up and put it back together. In technical terms the biggest thing that we’ve done is migrate a much larger part of our code to run on the SPUs. The PS3 has this elaborate architecture where there’s a whole bunch of different places you can have your code run and we had it all running in the slow part.”

By sussing out the hardware Sucker Punch believes it has a game that could never be achieved on another console. “If you look at games like Uncharted 2 that’s a game that you actually can’t do on Xbox no matter how clever you are, there’s just more processing power on the PS3,” Zimmerman explained. “inFamous 2 is going to be the same way. You’ll look at it and see that there’s no way we could have done this game on 360.”

 

I don't have any intention to post this because of only on PS3 thing but It will be posted here anyways so might as well post this right now.

Not much of a loss for me. Never really got attached  to the character or the story, but only the gameplay. As long as they keep the gameplay I'm fine.

Anyways, good for us gamers I guess, we get a better package overall.

How many times,have we heard this PR speak from studio's that make ps3 exclusives. lol



If they spoke of the hardware differences between Wii and HD they might have a point, yet I fail to see that now. They power difference of the 360 and the PS3 is too minimal to be so important as a factor.



And still two years later those graphics will look common place and no one will remember.

He's right about one thing, about the "no matter how clever you are", since what you have to be is creative to create great graphics, not clever. Graphics, graphics.... do them right, not them technical.



I have gotten over the new cole design. I do like how the characters don't just jitter in a stance now. They act like people!

Just give us the old cole voice actor PLEASE!

From what I've seen of it, they're on the right track. inFAMOUS was a good foundation (as were Drake's Fortune & Killzone 2) so I'm looking forward to this upgrade. The physics and amount of the things they can get on screen with the system is sometimes staggering and inFAMOUS was a good representation of that.
