Well, fine at the first point. Although, would you not agreee that RPG is mostly assumed to be a video game?

And at the second point, do you think WoW has more players than FF nowadays? Not rhetoric, it's a question.

No, I wouldn't, not outside of gaming circles.

The last installbase numbers for active subscriptions I remember was 11 million people playing WoW back at the end of 2008. I don't know how many are playing now.

So we really can't determine which series is more popular. Or how many people play either.

Popularity has nothing to do with this discussion. That was the point of my first paragraph two posts back.

We can determine which series is more popular according to your stated standard of "what leaps to mind for the most people". It's going to be WoW. WoW has been played by more people than most games can ever aspire to. 11 million was the active subscriptions at the time, not counting those that had been dropped in the previous four years. For the time period from 2004-2010, WoW has destroyed Final Fantasy and every other RPG that isn't Pokemon (and maybe also Pokemon).

Not that I'm a big fan (I was), but when people say RPG, Final Fantasy always come to mind. Much more than the RPGs I actually like nowadays like Mario and Luigi, Dragon Quest or Pokemon.

Morrowind.

The Final Fantasy series has sold dam near 100 million copies. You think less than 11 million people bought that many?

FF has been a commercial success since the 80s. I don't WoW will be overtaking that any time soon. It's been so massive for such a long period of time I doubt WoW is more popular.

Wizardry.  Sir-Tech we salute you!

You put a J in front of that and I think Suikoden.  Put a W in front of it and i think Daggerfall.

Wow, i thought i am the only one who knows Wizardry here, its a shame.

Always good to find other people who know Wizardry.  Im sitting here looking at all 8 of them in their original containers with their manuals and what not.

Such a shame Sir-Tech went under, such a shame.

OT:  I can see how people could think of DnD, Final Fantasy, or something else completely when asked what comes to mind.  9 times out of 10 I would think Video game (even if not specified) and out would come Wizardry.  That one other time, I would think of DnD.  It is all about the timing tho.  If you asked me right after I just completed a JRPG, I would probably say Suikoden, likewise with Daggerfall or DnD.

Since the question is,  "What game comes to mind when I say RPG?" the answer should be different per person.  Saying what "should" come to mind for someone else is rather silly.  In America, I would bet you are more likely to find a random person who DOES NOT play WoW but knows of it, than the same with Final Fantasy.  It is very likely DnD would trounce them both.

First, admit that popularity has nothing to do with the topic.
