Yes, in Japanese culture it's considered polite to slurp your food and swear a lot.

Swearing in Japanese is different. In the right context, his interpretation probably could have been halfway accurate, because swearing is generally a matter of inflection there. Vulgar words that aren't necessarily swears can gain that meaning.
