Forums - General - Have you been unemployed? If so, how did you get over the whole situation?

Oh! I am a teacher. I teach History and social Studies in private schools

1. You are not alone. I went through long-term unemployment from 2001-2004. It didn't make me a better person. It stomped my ass into little pieces of hamburger meat and made me depressed, angry and miserable.

2. Tell your partner/friends/family and ACCEPT THEIR SUPPORT. Can't stress this enough. I made the mistake of pushing people away when I was down, and that made things worse.

3. Get all the benefits you can - unemployment insurance, foodstamps, temporary assistance, everything. No need to be ashamed, we pay for this stuff with our taxes anyway.

4. Credit card payments and other forms of debt: decide what you can afford and what is essential, and what is not. Whatever you do, DON'T pile up debt, it will come back to haunt you later.

5. Apply for degree programs or other education.

6. This sounds crazy, but... keep on gaming. Videogames were a lifesaver for me, they kept me going. I know prices can be high, but there are plenty of used games and bargains out there.

Voluntary work? Yeah, maybe.

Exercise? Haven't done that yet but it is good idea

Getting any Job? Sure

(I am giving this short answers because this VG 3.0 is hard for me and I haven't been able to quote nobody)

Gee thanks everbody. The thing is I sometimes need to talk to process things over. My wife is great, but I don't want to keep talking about it with her. And most of my close friends were from work... so... They actually orgaized a nice good bye lunch party, but it couldn't help to turn out to be some kind of funeral LOL! I don't want to bring anybody down.

Wow ! You can always relie no the kindness of strangers! Or Ciberfriends? Thank you anyway, everybody.

Point 6? Oh yeah. Right now I am a little hooked up with Mass Effect

First off, don't take it personally. Even if you did feel victimized and that it was a personal attack, it's not. The job market is tough and it's easy to think you "didn't do enough" or "i don't think the job market is for me" (a la sucking up). The fact is, employers mostly look at their own agenda; their employees are a little lower on the priority list.

It's difficult, but like some others said in this thread, you need to get back on the horse with resumes, job agencies and just general networking. In the meantime you should spend some time with friends, exercise, movies, sports, and  perhaps some video games you've been meaning to catch up on. Yes, it may take a long time (or not), but the same way we have to deal with 'dicks' in everyday life, the same way we have to deal with unemployment. i had to deal with it for years before i got a below minimum wage job, and eventually worked my way up from there (with more unemployment in between).

Also, I know this is bad and everything, but remember, "the man" stuck it to you, feel free stick it back to them a little.

- I was unemployed

- I was also having too much free time

- I m now working on a supermarket to "busy me" and making lot of sport

Just try to find a part time job or to find an activity that can help you to stay active

Time to Work !

i left my job under very controversial circumstances so i know what your talking about. i tride a series of things including going back to college, but my lack of transportation stoped me dead in my tracks (I had so mutch support to do so and still do).

my advice is to get back on the grind quick. i was at a point of dispare, but optimistic (and still out of work/ La sucks).

i'm begging you to find something to do. i'm a very finacial person so i saved and prepared for the possiblity of finding my self without a job. whats worse is that my brother just left his job and then his house got robbed. needless to say he didn't save any money to fall back on.

"What did you do?"

I did nothing. Well, maybe what I should do and didn´t was to suck up. I can't be a bootlicker. I just can't. Now that I think about it, there's nothing wrong about it. I mean, if that is what it takes, maybe I'll do it. But it is not in me. I felt that the only thing I should do is my job. You know, do it the best I can. But at the end it had nothing to do with performance. It was a matter of politics.

The thing is that the system is designed for the employer to let go the employees with virtually no previous notice. I feel it was wrong, they should have told me in advance, but it wasn't anything illegal. They usually tell people one month before the contract expires. They told me one week before so it caught me totally off guard. Nobody saw that coming.

Sure, I will take any job, I don't know if they would offer me something. Most of the times I have tried that, they tell me that I am overqualified, so they don't hire me.

In the end, the problem is not finding another job. I think I will. My problem is ... how not to lose my head in the meantime?

Wow, 1 weeks notice? I had about 2 hour notice at my last job. I worked my ass off for them and once I had finish my task (part of the job was so shit they couldn't get anyone else to do it, previous employees had just not turned up the next day) I was told not to come in the next day. I was definitely the hardest worker there and I had done the other parts of the jobs other people were hired too do. I was there for about 4 months..

Now I'm in my first solid job and pretty happy that I won't just be made redundant at any moment.
