lol @ slanted metacritic stats. Yes, let's use a source that only considers western reviews for comparing western and Japanese RPGs...
Citing metacritic here is about as relevant as trotting out Famitsu reviews ;)

For wat it's worth, I'm ignoring the MC scores and I think most others are, too.
WRPG'S are just better this gen.
PROUD MEMBER OF THE PLAYSTATION 3 : RPG FAN CLUB

imo the only decent ones of the wrpg list are the two mass effects.
both very entertaining, but meta of above 90 or even 95% is pretty crazy.
i hate oblivion. i bought it and i soooo regret it. a rpg without any atmosphere.
fallout 3 is a little better, but for me not more than maybe a 8 / 10 game.
i didn't have a lot of fun with fable 2 either. i think the combat is really bad. and the character interaction thing is so shallow. never played fable 1, but was very disappointed by fable 2. no way it's a 89% game.
just one comment one the jrpg list: vesperia, the best jrpg i have played in years, not only below 90 but even below 80 (!) says enough.
JRPG because Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles.

JRPGs going back to Final Fantasy 2 and earlier have always been story driven to the extent where they constrict non-linear, free form gameplay as most recently seen in Final Fantasy 13. WRPGs such as the Fallout series, Elder Scroll series, Fable series, Borderlands, and on have the story as a backdrop to the mostly non-linear gameplay. There are exceptions such as WRPGs developed by Bioware ala Mass Effect. What I love most about a game such as Fallout 3 is that character levels are not everything. If I want to go kill some Super Mutants after exiting the vault, I can take a very long and perilous journey to the crashed UFO, pick up the Alien Blaster, and melt faces. Conversely, I remember plugging hours into getting those extra 2 to 5 levels in Final Fantasy 2 because the boss at the end of the cave was unbeatable unless I grinded those extra few levels. |
Sounds like your in the middle which is a good thing lol.
As far as HD consoles go I'll admit I've played more WRPGs than JRPGs.
Elder Scrolls IV, Borderlands, Fallout 3, Sacred 2 vs Star Ocean 4, Folklore, Demon's Souls
Honestly though, I play my DS more than my PS3, and I've played a ton of JRPGS on the DS, so I guess JRPGs win for me.

I like your list though I would move ME2 at no. 1.
Am i the only one that thought finial fantasy and mass effect 2 sucked? The rest of the games on that list were good, but i do think the witcher and blue dragon should be higher than a few of those games.

Where is Demon's souls ?
it stands at 90 on metacritic , the highest rated jrpg
anyway, Demon's souls and FFXIII are enough for me to prefer jrpgs.
