Forums - Sales - Alan Wake has the best attach rate in...

Japan.

I just happened to notice the sales of AW in Japan this week and it looked on the surface like AW was selling quite reasonably in Japan, all things considered. Turns out my initial impression was right.

Japan attach rate is 2.16%

EMEAA attach rate in 1.21%

Americas attach rate is 1.2%

I expect Alan Wake resonates a bit with the Resident Evil player. Actually I think AW is looks more Resident Evil than RE5 in terms of game atmosphere.

I think relative to the overall sales performance of AW, and the whole tradition of Western developed games not really doing that well in Japan, and that AW is a brand new IP, this game is selling quite well in the land of the rising sun.

Hopefully USA and EMEAA can leg it up to 2% or thereabouts over time.

I hope Alan Wake has long and strong legs...

Remedy did an excellent job on the game.  It has definately received lower reviews then it deserves.

I hope it reaches 2%. Its one of the best games this generation. It deserves way better sales than what its at right now. It should reach 1 million life time as it crossed 500K last week.

I'm sure it will eventually reach 1 mil.  But, the real question is will it be enough to become profitable.  I'd have to guess no.  Not when you factor in 5 years of development.  And at least the first year was spread across the 360, PC, and PS3.  Then later dropped to just PC and 360 for the next few years, which at some point also changed from an open-world game to a linear one.  And what seemed like the last minute, it was dropped to a 360 exclusive.  So, it may crawl to 1 mil sold, but I wouldn't expect MS to take the risk and fund a sequel anytime soon.

remember remedy is small team, and they are ready for alan wake 2,

uncharted 2 or KZ2 3 mil with very high budget, vs remedy small team.

1 mil is profitable for them

Well, I hope you guys are right.

and if they release it on the PC as part of Microsoft's supposed push back into PC gaming I am sure that they could make some profit overall.

i hope they don't have to sell Hot Dogs in Helsinki. Remedy wouldn't deserve that. :(

Yes, they swallowed it.”

As a total shot in the dark I'd say $15 million budget (most of the salaries for 40 people over 5 years is about $7-8 million, then add on overheads and other stuff gotta be getting up to the $15 million easy). Can't remember that chart showing ther break down of the game price between studio, publisher, retailer etc, was it $20 to the studio? Anyway assuming that, 15 million/$20 = 750K. So I figure Remedy's break even is 750K. They should get there eventually, ekeing out 1 million over time, though probably at a reduced price between 750K and 1 million. They'll make a profit for sure, but not a large one, certainly not large enough to fund AW2, so they need the income from DLC and some seed money from MS to complete AW2. But given cost savings for AW2 I figure the 2nd game will break even at 500K or less and assuming it's at least equal in quality the 2nd game should make them a tidy profit.

The fortunate thing with KZ2 and the Uncharted's is the 1st partyness, so the dev and publisher are essentially the same company which means the price pie is cut into fewer pieces. Uncharted 2 didn't take very long to make. I'm guessing UC2 broke even before Christmas, and I reckon KZ2 did too (with it's longer selling time).

If AW got made for a considerably lower budget than most AAA games then that just adds to Remedy's reputation so much more. Being able to make a game that looks and plays as well as people say for a modest budget is impressive.

Well we don't know if they didn't get a small bonus from MS for dropping pc version of the game.
