Forums - Nintendo - Where Retro pails in comparison to Rare.

You honestly believe Conkers Bad Fur Day is a game for adults? Don't get me wrong, I love that game, but it is the least mature game I have ever played. All Retro games are mature and that is one of the many reasons why they are vastly superior to Rare

The games take much more time to make now.

That's not just an issue with Retro but all studios require more time or more personnel now.   It's impossible to ask Retro to produce the same numer of games today that Rare did back in the day.  Hell, Rare doesn't even do it themselves.  Not even in the early GC days, not in the Xbox days and certainly not now in their X360 days.

Also, those 4 other titles that Retro was working were canceled by Nintendo, not Retro.  Nintendo put most of Retro's technical staff on the Metroid prime project which left very few to handle the technical hurdles for the other titles.  Because they couldn't get the game engines up to par fast enough, Nintendo nixed those projects and put everyone on the Metroid Prime project.

The comparison between the 2 studios is more metaphoric than literal.

From what I remember that is partially true ...

Nintendo was very impressed with the artistic abilities of Retro Studios but was rather unimpressed with their technical staff. After cleaning house Retro only (really) had one complete technical team that could handle one project at a time.

Retro was in a lot of trouble when Nintendo cancelled the projects, cleaned up the staff and placed a new CEO whom they trust. Cancellation was more a financial reason than technical.

not very fair to compare the two, Retro's games are always being changed by Nintendo to ensure top notch quality, while Rare sorta did their own thing

Miyamoto said in a recent interview that during Donkey Kong Country he was not only consulted but involved in the decision making. So Rare didn't really do their own thing they still had Nintendo supervision. As for the quantity some argued that today a developer can't produce as many games as fast.

Well lets look at Rare today. In the last 8-years while Retro only made 4 games Rare made 8 games for the X-Box , 360. Sure these games aren't the quality of Retro's but thats not even including their DS and GBA games which they also diverted teams too.

Also just barely UbiSoft said the new Rayman was made by a team of 8, it looks like a pretty good game maybe even close to Donkey Kong.

Isn't Retro now in the hundreds? I wish Nintendo expanded them if they are indeed to small to handle a few games at a time.

Joe, that new Rayman game is a downloadable title.  It's not a full scale retail title.

And Retro has about 75 employees while Rare has over 200.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Well, Retro would have to release a triage of great games on the Nintendo before releasing a couple of mediocre games and going underground for a few years.

Rare used to be comparable to Blizzard and Squaresoft, but it made a few mediocre games in the 2000s with the Conker series and It's Mr. Pants.

I hope Retro can make new IPs for Nintendo in the future, maybe on the next gen console.

No King K Rool in DKCR is where Retro pales in comparison.

Not necessarily.

The universe of Donkey Kong Country is the Jungle. While the cremlings are cool enemies, they are not essencial in this universe. There are many jungle enemies Donkay Kong can face and I think the Tiki are a good idea for enemies from what I have seen in the gameplay footage

Old Rare > Retro >>>>>>> New Rare

That said, I would love to see Retro use their talents at some new IPs
